I have a love-hate relationship with Sonic 3 Part I. Getting so many game overs while trying to defeat Big Arm, only to see such an anticlimactic ending. Kid me was a super frustrated early adopter. Yet, I still had tons of fun with it, assuming that was it. Once S&K released, it became my favorite 2D Sonic. S3&K has its own moments, but it overall feels amazing.

Sonic 3 isn’t as perfect as most people say it is I think, but I still think it’s the best classic game. Marble Garden and Launch Base already disqualify it from being perfect, and there’s a couple crap zones in & Knuckles as well. Most of it is great, though. Hydro City is remarkably not awful for a water level. Even though the stage itself is pretty crap, Marble Garden act 1 is my favorite song from the classic games, so I don’t mind playing that zone pretty much only for that reason.
