Saturday afternoon here in New York City and we got some TREMENDOUS oi coming up. But first let's listen to some poetry. Yes, POETRY!! YO MATE, WHERE YOU GOIN'?. DON'T LEAVE!!.... THIS IS PUNK POETRY! When we first heard the tremendous compilation Strength Thru Oi in May 1981 we immediately noticed that sprinkled between the great oi tracks there was a lad named Garry Johnson reciting his poetry. This was no pretty rainbows and daffodils swaying in the breeze stuff, but rather real working class kids' thoughts, short and to the point with pure impact. Here's some info on Johnson from the website Last.FM---Garry Johnson was a true working class punk poet. A genuine rebel who I liken to a Cockney Dylan. He was half-Irish and a champion of the underdog. His musical influences were The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Jam but Johnson was also influenced by the likes of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Bob Dylan, Robin Hood and working class rebels. He was also influenced by British movies such as Quadrophenia, Get Carter and The Long Good Friday. All those influences are featured in his five books.. "The Boys Of The Empire", "The Gangster Of Slang", "The Punk Poet", "Richard Grimson Is Guilty" and "Born In A House In Hackney". His lyrics and punk poems also appear in "Boys Of The Empire" and "My Life In Words" Various punk bands recorded his songs. (my note---The Business' great Suburban Rebels which we just heard yesterday was written by him.) Let's hear two of his poems before we encounter The Last Resort.
