I see this was Published on the 5th anniversary of his death and the day before I turned 60. I'll clue you into something. Johnny did love Joan, very much (not romantically), and he did a lot for her career. They were great friends offstage, especially. Of course, she was always with her oft-mentioned but seldom seen husband, Edgar. Johnny admired her sardonic, caustic wit and quick, flashing intelligence, and back then in the mid-80s, when she did herself up, she could be a knockout. When she chose to sign on to hosting a talk show directly opposite his, especially after she (verbally) pledged to him that she wouldn't, it was almost like a knife through his heart, the betrayal. But he did love her.
