Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus by Taylor Mac with Nathan Lane and George C. Wolfe

Prior to the Broadway opening and world premiere of Pulitzer Prize finalist and MacArthur Fellow Taylor Mac’s newest comedy, three-time Tony Award® winning actor Nathan Lane joined five-time Tony Award winning director George C. Wolfe and Mac for a moderated discussion. Set just after the blood-soaked conclusion of William Shakespeare’s first tragedy, "Titus Andronicus," in "Gary," Mac’s singular world view intersects with Shakespeare’s first tragedy. Set during the fall of the Roman Empire, the years of bloody battles are over, the country has been stolen by madmen, and there are casualties everywhere. And two very lowly servants - Lane and two-time Tony Award winning actress Andrea Martin - are charged with cleaning up the bodies. It’s the year 400 - but it feels like the end of the world.

I listened to this fascinating conversation among great artists after viewing GARY last night. It was a brilliant piece of theatre, in the burlesque physical style of ancient Roman comedies--a much-needed injection of Downtown Theatre into the Broadway world of mostly vapid comedies. I look forward to seeing it again.
