Gary Karr performed with the Valley Symphony Orchestra, Carl Seale Conductor, on March 10, 1987. We owe a debt of gratitude to Mary Doneis, South Texas Symphony Association Board Member and Edinburg CISD string teacher, for her efforts in making this concert featuring Mr. Karr possible. He had recently been a clinician at either the TMEA convention in February or the TODA convention in August of the preceding year. Karr's contributions to the art of the doublebass are summarized in a letter written by Leopold Stokowski: "I have known several great artists intimately and you are one of the greatist. Technical passages for the contrabass which are impossible, you play with ease, even infusing humor. But your conception of music is far above the technical. You express things in music which no words could make clear."
