Random Bloke, is that the excuse for losing three games out of three ? What was Gary's excuse in the 1986 WC quarters when Ruggeri nullified him almost completely ?

@@johnnyoranges He still scored didn’t he? And nearly got another. But I take your point. England badly missed Terry Butcher at Euro 88. Wright and Adams were poor. And the lessons were learnt when they adopted the sweeper system v Holland at Italia 90. If you add Gazza, Platt and possibly a more respectful attitude to the Ireland team, that’s probably why we got 2 draws in Italy rather than the 2 defeats in Germany.

@@Smudgeroon74 I don’t think so. The problem was the formation. And inexperience. Both Walker and Watson were equally inexperienced. Certainly it was a blessing in disguise for Walker who had a great Italia 90, as opposed to poor Tony Adams who was left out. It did feel that in many ways Adams was the scapegoat for Euro 88.

The usual English story. Firstly, they think they're going to win it. Secondly, they get exposed as being ordinary, in this case losing three games out of three, but hey, the final instalment is they've already got their excuses ready i.e. "we were robbed", "we were unlucky", "it's not fair" etc. Let's face it. Going back to 1930, they've never even finalized in a major comp cos they're CRAP.

I think 1966 went quite well and a grt team in 1970. Semi finalists 2 yrs after this clip. Charlton was a revelation for Ireland, but ultimately you didn't qualify from the group either. Oh and Cascarino was never legit to play for you, so that's a 0-1 result for us in Dublin in 1990 thank you! Happy Paddy's Day!😀
