It’s heartwarming that more folks over in the States are uncovering Gary Moore and he’s getting the recognition that his playing deserves. Emotion and intensity rule over straight up speed. Musicality. So many can burn up the fretboard but what are they actually saying with those notes ? It’s not a gun fight or some kind of list ranking exercise. Too many of those “lists”. Just a supreme talent who was able to play rock, metal, blues, jazz, celtic and fusion and left it all on stage. I’ve seen many, many musicians but on a live stage, Gary was among the very best.

Saw him in a tiny club in Manchester, 1974/5, can't really remember. Basically, I can't remember the seventies... Anyway, he was on this little raised platform, not a stage, literally 6 feet away and I just stood there, gobsmacked. Didn't recognise a single chord or scale.... After a short break, he came back on alone and just improvised for 15 minutes until the rest of them (Colosseum something) eventually joined him Think it cost me a quid. A quid to watch a genius.......

"Dominating the fretboard," is as good a description of Gary Moore's style as any I've heard. He was a force of nature. I don't think there has been anyone else quite like him. He was incredibly loud on stage, on the edge, but never out of control. Shapes of Things live was even better.

I’m sure this is one gig I saw Gary do. I saw him twice. I was very lost and alone. But I found my way to the front right beside him and he took me to a wonderful place. The audience went crazy. He had just an ordinary pair of trousers and shoes. No big rock star stuff. He was so genuine. Never forget it. Superb is the word.

Thanks,man! Saw Gary Moore lots of times live. Best guitarist that ever walked the earth. No one will ever play with more passion and fire than Gary Moore from Belfast. Gary was around already around 1970. His reputation as a guitarplayer already then, was proceeding him. He blew everybody out of the water in the 70s. Played hard rock with Thin Lizzy, did fusion with Collusseum II, did work with Andrew Lloyd Webber etc etc. In the 80s he did the guitar hero hard rock thing. Fantastic stuff. So he had two decades with exeptonal guitar playing before he came to Still got the blues. Huge in Europe, overlooked in america. He influenced everybody from Joe Bonamassa to Steve Lukather, Kirk Hammet and everybody else. Hammet from Metallica now owns the worlds most famous Les Paul; The Gary Moore/Peter Green 1959 Les Paul standard. Played by Gary from 1973 right up to a couple of years before he died. You should do anything from Garys 1987 Stockholm, Sweden show, where he's at his peak. Amazing band there also, with Bob Daisley on bass, Eric Singer on drums and Neil Carter on guitars and keys. And if u liked the Shapes of things version; check out the live version shot for the Emerald Isles video (1984) with an extended guitar-solo that will blow you right out of the water.

Thanks for this marathon of Gary, I don’t think anyone did 4 in a row before and it was amazing and deserving! Gary was really one of a kind, a true magician! Often people say the guitar is the extension its player, but I truly believe in Gary’s case it was the other way around, he was the extension of the guitar, and you could see and feel it in every note he played! So just a few remarks to your reactions… People often say that “Still got the Blues” was his signature song, but that’s wrong, it was his economically most successful song and album. But his signature song, or flagship song as you put it, was “Parisienne Walkways” which Phil Lynnott wrote 1979, after him hearing Gary playing some chords at his flat. Gary played that song from then on until his last days, always differently if you search for it and listen to it, but in my opinion his best version was one of his last live performances in Montreaux at the Jazz Festival in 2010, from which this performance of “The Messiah” is as well btw, only 30 years earlier! The guitar he plays here in 1990 is Peter Greenes guitar, which he gently called “Greeny”, a very special guitar with a unique sound and currently in the proud hands of Kirk Hammet from Metallica! Second remark would be that you should do from the first two songs the live performances as well, because, as you might have noticed, he was something else on stage. Definitely “Shapes of things” from which there is a breathtaking performance from 1984 in his hometown Belfast, but from “Over the Hills” as well, here the 1987 performance from Stockholm, which is for me one of the best concerts ever with incredible performances, lead by “Empty Rooms” in my opinion! But there is one performance of his blues era as well you definitely should try out, which is “Separate Ways” live in a small country club in London in 1992 where he recorded as small concert just before the big “After Hours” world tour. The song may maybe not everyone’s favorite, but the double guitar intro is something you never saw before, trust me!

Jeff Beck called Roy Buchanan "The Master of The Telecaster," Beck was so stunned by his abilities he dedicated the song to him on - Blow By Blow's version of Stevie Wonder's "Cause We've Ended as Lovers." He said, "Roy was beyond all the greats." It's also why Gary Moore put The Messiah in his set. His respect for Roy was just like Jeff's.

Your reaction was enjoyable and interesting Nick. I saw Gary on every tour from 1985 (also at the Hammersmith Odeon) onwards. The passion you can see and hear in these recordings and videos was what he brought to every performance. You rightly said, he was putting on a show. Only him and Jeff Healey have literally made me burst out in tears mid-solo. He lived a few miles from me in England and I met him in town a couple of times. In person, he was a softly spoken guy.

One of my benchmarks for guitarists is whether, on the first time of hearing a track and without being told the artist or band, you can identify the guitarist. If you can it means the guitarist has developed their own style of play to such a point that it could be no one else ! Think Mark Knopfler, Ritchie Blackmore, Dave Gilmore etc....and without doubt Gary Moore !!! Gary painted with the full pallette, he could play fast, he could play slow, he could hold a single note longer than anyone else dared to, he could leave longer pauses (total silence) for longer than anyone else dared to. "The loner"......An instrumental track......it simply didn't need lyrics, Gary could make his guitar relate everything you needed to know. "Empty Rooms"......"Where we learned to live without love"...... A glimpse into his soul. Nobody ever put more of themselves into their guitar play and maybe nobody ever got quite as much out ?.......❤

Back in the mid-80’s, the Victims of the Future album was the first time I had ever heard Gary Moore and I was totally blown away by it. I still have this album on vinyl and still love it. Shapes of Things was a definite favourite along with the title track and Murder in the Skies. This was Gary’s metal phase before he went into rock/blues in the 90’s, which was also amazing.

Gary didn’t use tapping perhaps consciously to avoid comparisons with EVH and Randy Rhoads. That sound in the ‘Shapes Of Things” solo is one of his signature moves - open string trills with just his bionic left hand middle finger.
@sparpant
@sparpant Жыл бұрын
@@kbrewski1 Randy would not have used tapping if it wasn’t for Eddie. However, in 1980, if you were a metal guitarist who used tapping then you would attract comparisons with both Eddie and Randy. 40+ years latter given that Randy’s career was tragically short and Eddie’s use of tapping became as natural to him as any other guitar technique and nobody has ever come close to his brilliance and inventiveness with it I do admit that today’s perspective is different.

Concerning phones, Nick, you have my full appreciation. Turn them off and keep the adventure alive in your minds, just as Nick said. It will become a benefit in later years. When you raise your smartphone to record the scene, you will concentrate on the image detail on your screen, but not anymore on what is really happening on stage. In the 80's and 90's we didn't have that opportunity, but I still remember all the gigs I've seen by Tina Turner, U2, Sade, The Pretenders, Lou Reed, Dire Straits, Meat Loaf, The Rolling Stones, Koinonia, Robben Ford, Luther Allison, Deep Purple, Santana, Roger Hodgson, Marillion and so many more. I can see them right before my eyes, without having a video to remind me.

Great stuff. I got into Gary quite early. He even lived in Upton Park round the corner from me for a while in his earlier London days. There's a funny video on YT of him taking a documentary maker through a market in Old Ford E8, I think it was. Hilarious, as he was getting grief from the stallholders! Anyway I was able to get to see him many times live. Once even with Collisseum ll. I loved his fusion period. He appeared on album by Gary Boyle , formerly of Isotope and added some fantastic magic dust to a couple of fusion tracks on there. I caught him opening for someone (I actually forget who) with his G-Force band, which then kinda morphed to his solo hard rock band which I saw him perform with several times. In between were his Lizzy 'in and outs', Greg Lake and other projects. I love an instrumental 'Sunset' that he used to dedicate to Randy Rhoads, if I recall correctly - beautiful mournful piece. Then, he returned to the blues. His blues anyway. I had never really been into the blues that much.......but Gary's blues.....well, that was it. He got me into the blues and I can never thank him enough for that. I saw Gary for the last time in Hamburg around 2008 I think. He was way too loud, but then he always was. He was also a bit grumpy at the start but by the end he felt the love and as always he left it all out there. It's a bloody shame he has gone, but what a musical legacy. A GIANT.

Simply the best guitarist ever!! Why? It's all about emotion and how he can convey it , be it blues, rock, jazz fusion, US commercial 80s rock , shred metal, heavy metal, hard rock acoustical, Celtic, Celtic rock , folk, , country and even drum and bass rock/ blues fusion !! But always you could recognise his playing, he constantly evolved never afraid to change musical direction, regardless of musical treads, but even more impressive is the list of artists and bands he has played with over the year's way to many to list, but if I was to recommend two songs that would show Gary Moore's Guinness it would be; the loner live in Stockholm 87 and business as usual live in Montreux 97 . The song Over the Hills & Far Away is not by Led Zeppelin, it is a Gary Moore original. It has been covered by Nightwish and I saw on KZbin even a video of the song performed by Nightwish vocalists Tarja and Floor Jansen. Interesting that Gary Moore in the nineties also worked on an album with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce (BBM), who both played in Cream with Clapton. The song The Messiah made me think of Focus, early seventies with Jan Akkerman on guitar. Earlier work of Jan Akkerman in Brainbox is also highly recommended.

Nick, great marathon, Ray thank you for the marathon. I love Gary Moore, such a great lose at such a young age. But Nick, I believe he only did one album with Thin Lizzy called Black Rose. He did rock out more earlier in his career, but later on it was more the blues, which is the Gary Moore I really love. I have a CD that he does The Thrill Is Gone with BB King which is absolutely fabulous. They both trade licks back & forth, great stuff. He's done a few songs with that Irish theme to it , Blood Of Emeralds is one of them that's killer. The Messiah Will Come Again is a Roy Buchanan song & Gary does a great job on it & he does it with a little more fire, but you really, rally need to hear Roy Buchanan's version. If there was any guitarist that could make their guitar sound like it was crying, it's Roy Buchanan. Please check that out for yourself. I would love to see you react to it. But you really need to hear that. Roy does a killer version of Neil Young's Down By The River to. I wish I could afford to give a marathon Nick, but that's life. Great video, keep up your good work.

Speaking of blues guitarists, maybe react to something from Kenny Wayne Shepherd. His singer, Noah Hunt, is amazing. "Blue on Black" is my favorite of theirs. Jonny Lang is also tremendous. He sings his own work. I recommend "Lie to Me" and "Missing Your Love." He broke out at 16, and I saw him open for. . . someone. Can't remember, but I remember being blown away.

The Yardbirds Shapes Of Things was a Pop Marching beat. Jeff Beck quit the band and hired Rod Stewart and Ron Wood and Mickey Waller to record his version which was drastically changed in the same way Joe Cocker changed The Beatles With A Little Help From My Friends. Both are great but Jeff made it much heavier than his previous band. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJSUaHenmKZph8U

*The Face MELTER!!!* I was wondering when you'd get around to the EARLIER material of Gary! . . . He was considered a "Metal" Guitarist (especially coming from the later NWOBHM years) decades before most thought he was a "Blues" player, which is the earlier material I prefer, and the 2 tracks I would have suggested was his unique version of "the Yardbirds" song _Shapes of Things_ , (which is a personal Top 10 cover) and Over the Hills and Far Away (which has 3 different versions), so I'm glad REY went with them! "Nightwish" (w/Tarja) did a version of it too, but Gary's original is heavy enough for anyone to enjoy. I would have added "The End of the World" and "Don't Take Me for a Loser". He has a great voice and unique guitar tone/distortion (and those cool fills, trills, hammer-on's and "harmonic" tweeks). But Over the Hills solo is over the top and awesome (especially that wild whammy bar - and picking technique after the solo when he starts singing again). Another track that gave a hint for what was to come, which is my personal fave instrumental by him is "The Loner" also off of Wild Frontier . . . this is a blues track that makes his guitar CRY and weep in pain. Gary also appeared on Greg Lake's1st solo album, and his guitar work with Greg on rhythm guitar, "Nuclear Attack" which has a great MONSTER riff throughout. - It was a VERY sad day when I heard he was gone, he had a lot more to do while he was here. One of my favorite guitarists of all time. Rest in Peace Gary \m/.

Gary Moore is a rabbit hole a guy whose albums never sounded the same. The Wild Frontier album from 1987 became a huge success at least in Europe and when he began writing songs for the next album he wanted them to sound much different. Wild Frontier was his most Celtic influenced album There is a video here on YT where Gary plays Over the Hills with Irish group The Chieftains. Although i like his blues stuff but my favorite songs of him he did between 1983-89. Glad you choose a live version of The Messiah Will Come Again it's epic!! I remember it was May 1 1990 and the venue was the Concert Hall in my city. On stage Gary Moore whom at that time was my number one idol! The last song/encore was TMWCA and it was pure magic he played with such emotion and passion and also improvisation! A memory for life that's for sure!

The Messiah is a song by the great Roy Buchanan; you should give some of his music a listen. He was one of rock's most tragic figures. Insanely talented, held in awe by his world-famous peers,(Jeff Beck idolized him, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, and SRV. Buchanan was a tortured soul whose pain could be clearly felt through his music. He was known as the Master of the Telecaster, The Worlds Greatest Unknown Guitarist, The tragedy of his life was twofold: first, despite his off-the-charts abilities, he was never known to the general public, but rather familiar only to serious rock fans and second, that he was found dead, hanging in a jail cell in Fairfax County, Virginia at the age of 48. You often hear of guitarists who can make the instrument "cry" or "sing", Roy could do all that and then some. The only artists who even come close are Jeff Beck (who matches Buchanan for technique but not emotion) and the late Gary Moore, whose coverer the song is considered a tribute to his deep admiration of Roy's groundbreaking talent. Listen to "Roy's Bluz", "Hey Joe (Tribute to Jimi Hendrix)", Ramon's Blues," "Turn To Stone" and "Wayfaring Pilgrim". And that's just a taste.
