This period sound is the pinnacle. Luckily i feel that he returned to this sort of sound with Pure, Exile and all since.

Great song, no matter how often he's forever identified with 'Cars'... this is the apex & the conclusion of a great moment in pop/punk/new wave, modern music...

You'd also need his hair implants. Face of a 63yo, hair of a 20yo.

No matter what anybody says, it was never the same after the 28th April 1981. Period !!

I assume you refer to Gary Numan going it alone, you maybe right, but i adore this song and anything from 1979 -81, it was a great time to be 15 /16

Yes, things start going west after this period. Paul’s addiction and then sad demise I think precipitates it in some way. Gary seems to think he has to pander to the critics with some changes of direction. 😔

I love the scratchy guitar on this version. On a different subject I just wish less money went on the sets and lighting (Ridiculous amounts that wrecked profits) and the band got a bit more instead. This band was a really cool envelope for his ideas. Class!

The scratchy guitar is the same, but mixed in a bit louder during this live version, and yes, it does give it a rockier heavier sound... As for the lighting, I loved it (I was there on the second of the three nights)... I think the over-the-top lighting was for a different reason. Gary has Asperger's syndrome, and during his younger years, didn't really know how to deal with it, which is the reason for the lack of ad-lib dialogue between songs. A great light show plus his robotic style dancing covered up that. Of course, later on, he was able to master and cope with Asperger's, and interacts a lot more with the crowd.

None of his live versions matches the original recording in either of the two mixes. It's too Status Quo rock. Missing is the high, tinkly synth part over the intro, verses and outro on a G major while the band plays G-F-C-B flat which gives a spooky tension.
