Astounding how anyone with no prior synthesiser experience could come up with such incredible compositions. Arrangements on early Numan tracks were truly outstanding which's partly why they still sound fresh/exciting

Why did the UK media dislike Gary Numan so much in his early years? Answer- Conventional minds always struggle to understand and appreciate an innovative GENIUS.

@@BethellAthletico I remember the day I seen that interview and as my dad was a coal miner I decided then not to buy any more of his records at the time. I seen an interview later on with him saying he got it wrong! He lives near me now and I’ve bumped into him many times and we talked about it, the press and their hatred for him long before that interview! I think it was the NME magazine that said Numan would never influence any future bands Kanye West Nine inch nails Marilyn Manson Franz Ferdinand Dave Grohl To name a few!, I’m going to see him in May in Glasgow for his Pleasure Principal and replicas album mini tour, a present for my 60th birthday, I still haven’t spent any money on him😂. Turns out he really is a lovely guy but he’s not my hero anymore, my beautiful dad is, who died of pit related disease at 63 years of age! Priorities!

@@headron66 I lost all respect for him back then. Music and politics were incredibly tied together in the 80s, so him coming out to make clear he was a Tory was a real red rag to a bull. Every gig we went to back then were collection-points for coal-miners (sorry to hear about your father) and later on, the Greenham Common woman, regardless of the music style. Numan instead showed he was completely detached from his fans. It was even more heartbreaking because he was so brilliant, though it came while his musical output was taking a big turn for the worse (he'd already retired by then and then came back). While I've never liked much after Telekon I'm still happy to see he's still working and has a fantastic fan base. I had the wonderful chance to buy him a drink and chat with him at a Sex Pistol's Filthy Lucre party back in '96. We talked mostly about Telekon and his "retirement". He is one of the sweetest, most human guys one could ever wish to meet, and totally deserves the respect he's earned. Oddly, as you mention his influences on so many others, I've had Afrika Bambaataa's Metal on a loop all this week.

Me too. And the guitar and bass player showed the 666 hand gesture about 50 plus times. I like Gary;s music but he uses a lot of occultic symbolism, yes its a religion of darkness. Gary does the one eye Horus @2:37 mark in video above, he does this often and his pyramids along with occultic sign of osiris slain(he did this maybe 20 times when I saw him).

This video is a gem ! Just a couple of years prior you had all of those super cheesy acts of glam rock playing on TOTP like Suzie Quatro, Slade, The Sweet, not to mention all the prog rock bands. This guy changed music forever. He showed that you could make unique music and images without being part of the orthodoxy of rock music. All modern music comes from Are Friends Electric. Kraftwerk gets the credit from creating modern music, but Numan showed that anyone could do the same He changed British pop music and changed pop music world wide, just like the Beatles and Marc Bolan
@mongo61522 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct. The DIY of the modern age began with Numan..he proved that you didn't need to be Keith Emerson, Wendy Carlos or Kraftwerk to make electronic music and showed a whole generation of musicians how to do it. He should be in the (so-called) Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...he, more than anyone else shaped modern music. He showed that you could do it yourself without having a Ph.D in music theory or an engineering degree to make electronic music. After 40 years, he's still my inspiration to make electronic music, even if only as a hobby. One of the G.O.A.T.s

The sound of metal I want to be You I could learn to be a man Like you. Plug me in And turn me on Oh everything is moving. I need my treatment It's tomorrow they send me Singing 'I am an American'. Do you? Picture this If I could make the change I'd love to pull the wires from the wall Did you? And who are you And how can I try Here inside I like metal Aren't you All I know Is no-one dies I'm still confusing love with need.

I recall Gary being worried about the size of his bottom lip, again not wanting to look goofy. I'm always sorry and astounded at how certain prominent musicians of the time took Gary's stern face seriously and used it as an opportunity to make fun of him or to paint him as lost in narcissism. Nope! Gary is a kind soul with the curiosity and enthusiasm for nu things of a child. For him and us, Asperger syndrome was a gift.
