Probably my favourite SINGLE of all time by any artist. 'Cars' and 'Complex' from 1979 had made a HUGE impression on me and I couldn't wait to hear Gary Numan's new material. I clearly remember the day I bought the single, on the week of its release. May 1980. The first time I'd bought a single BEFORE it was in the charts. As a 15 year old school boy I was ridiculed mercilessly for liking Gary Numan but I learnt at an early age it's best to take no notice of what other people think!

I remember being in a pub in East Leake, Notts, and someone put this on the dukebox. I was 12 then, in 1979. I nearly swallowed my crisp packet whole - it was a new world. I'd never heard ought like it and it changed me and my mates forever. A new age had begun. This was closely followed by Visage, Fade to Grey and Ashes to Ashes by Bowie. God, what a time.. and I feel so privileged to have been there, when it happened.

Mid 1979 when Are Friends Electric and autumn 79 with Cars by Numan, then Buggles ‘video killed the radio star’ and The Police was the start of the shift away from 1970s disco and punk music, into the new wave and electronic pop stuff. Summer 1980 was start of the 80s properly with Ashes to Ashes by Bowie topping the charts in August.

Gary Numan is hands down one of the most underappreciated musicians of all time. This song is phenomenal... he's made other good stuff other than just The Pleasure Principle. A truly innovative musician who should've received more recognition for his work... although, Musicians still know and appreciate him. I hated Beck when I saw him at Riot Fest, but it was pretty dope that he at least brought Gary Numan on stage to cover Cars.

When I was about 11, Vice City came out and it had a song called "Cars" by some dude named Gary Numan. I really liked the song and so did my buddy. So we went to his place and went on his computer and typed "Gary Numan" into Limewire. "We Are Glass" was the first one we clicked on... I became obsessed in that moment. Since then, I've listened to every album of Numan's. "We Are Glass" will forever be one of my favorites.

I loved this style of bringing synthesizer piano sound to the forefront rather than guitars, especially by Gothic punk rockers who display snobby artistic facial expressions, but only the British can come up with musical expressions like this, I doubted Numan would be American when I heard his songs. The mood and lyrics are often spacey psychological curiosities, an escape from the same old same old conventional world we are often exposed to. He's very talented in my opinion
