I felt his palpable concern, sadness, and suppressed rage for and on behalf of a child who'd just witnessed his parents' murders. Gary's skill at delivery all those emotions with very few lines was quite a thing to behold.

I don't know, he literally says that he only got two notes in seven years, so thats not a hell of a lot of direction. I like Michael Caine's story about John Huston who said "Michael, your being paid an awful lot of money and if you couldn't do the job you wouldn't be here". Of course some actors love direction, some hate it, some love a certain kind of direction, some like others, some would like more direction on roles maybe they can't get their heads around. That seemed to be Harrison Fords problem on Blade Runner, and he never really got on with Ridley Scott. The 'some directors want your soul' remark seems accurate. A directors job is not acting, so soulless acting is pretty much death for directors, its probably why so many movies now are action movies where its almost just 'read the script'. I think I saw that Harrison's problem in Blade Runner was that he couldnt get a bead on whether he was playing a human or a replicant. And from Ridleys point of view thats EXACTLY what he wanted, an actor who didn't know because the character really doesn't know. Ridley Scott is said to create an atmophere on the set that mimics the performance that he needs in order to get that level of acting. William Friedkin was said to physically slap people. As the saying goes, if acting were easy, everybody would be doing it.

Gary Oldman is an exceptionally good actor. There have been at least three or four movies where I didn't realize he was the actor playing the character I was watching even though it's clearly him i.e., he's not hidden behind prosthetics or makeup. I just saw him as the character not the actor. For years I literally didn't realize he was in the Batman movies until I saw a cast list one day and was, "omg yeah, why did I not realize that." Same thing for the Fifth Element. Only other time that's happened to me was Dennis Quaid's portrayal of Doc Holliday in Wyatt Earp.

And I'm especially glad that his Gordon wasn't merely "the guy who calls Batman" and had an active role in the plot of each movie. He was far more of an important ally to Batman than Gordon had typically been portrayed in previous movies and shows.

It’s fascinating how much Gary old man can disappear into a character. If you look at how filmography it’s just insane how many different types of people he’s played and they’re all so varied and different. He might arguably be the greatest ever.
