Not only is the Harvey Keitel story true, but when in an interview he was later asked "was that the Brooklyn in you" he responded "it's the sense of worth in me". Which is honestly one of the coolest thing I've ever heard a Hollywood actor say.

Stanley Kubrick said that he never knew what he wanted until he saw it, that's why he kept asking for more takes. In the official kubrick documentary, Tom Cruise explains how he asked him what he was looking for take after take, and Kubrick said he was waiting for 'the magic'.

Whatever it was and however bad it may have been, I bet so many actors in Hollywood today would kill to have an expierience like that. Nowadays they put an actor in front of a green screen and give them a couple of takes if theyre lucky.

Kubrick and Cruise apparently had a bad relationship. Cruise didn’t want to do the amount of takes Kubrick wanted and would complain to the studio to try and get a limit, Kubrick’s daughter converted to Scientology during production and caused him to disown her (he saw it as an attempt by the church to get access to his shit after he died), almost got into a fight with David Miscavige over the fact they kept trying to get him to film on land owned by the church (so they could charge the studio a high rate and turn a nice profit), and apparently spent the entire production trying to break up Cruise and Kidman’s marriage.

I heard a story about "The Shining" where Jack Nicholson asked Stanley Kubrick to take it easy on Scatman Crothers (Hallorann) during the scene where he is killed with an axe. The thing with Kubrick is that he didn't know what he wanted, he knew what he didn't want. He would do endless takes if the actors did the same thing every time. It was up to them to change things up each time. You can't blame actors for not doing that when Kubrick wouldn't yell them. They had to figure it out on their own.Malcolm McDowell got along well with Kubrick because McDowell figured it out pretty quick. Kubrick loved working with Peter Sellers because Sellers was a genius at improv, and would change things up.

Kubrick asked for 80 takes because he knew that take 12 would produce one kind of effect, and take 75 would produce another. He wanted it all, and he'll decide which take to use post production. It sucked for actors, but he wasn't there to make friends, only great movies. And he succeeded.

He's a very good versatile actor, but Oldman is a little bit overrated imo. Dracula, Leon, True Romance, those are his best performances, but really don't think they rank anywhere close to some of the big performances from the likes of Pacino, Day Lewis, De Niro, Hanks, Nicholson, Fonda, etc.

@Testinator1234

I've seen all of them, and it doesn't change my opinion. Similarly, anyone could list the best performances of any half decent actor and it will be impressive. Also, saying actors play themselves is a bit unfair. De Niro certainly isn't himself in Taxi Driver compared to Raging Bull, Goodfellas or Meet the Parents. Like I said, I think Oldman is a very good actor, versatile, but the roles are often smallish, silly or supporting roles and for me his most powerful performances are nowhere near the best of those that I've listed. If you feel differently then fair enough, it's your opinion. I know this is a very subjective topic because sometimes an actor just lands a great movie with a great role and it's impossible to know how other actors might have fared in the same role. I personally don't think Oldman can, or has, reached a level of performance of something like Pacino in Scent of a Woman or Hank in Forest Gump.

Because while it’s well known Kubrick did this & Fincher is known for doing lots of takes also there’s a difference between the two. Kubrick was an asshole to specifically Shelley Duvall on “The Shining” and her performance & complexion is all just from exhaustion. Idk if that had an effect on her psyche or not considering her current state. But with Fincher while sometimes actors are like “come on let’s go” a lot of the time people love that he does so many because they know they’ve got a lot of chances. Personally in my opinion (as someone who’s never been on a set but will be in that line of work a few years down the line) it’s all about how the director makes the vibe of the set.

Kubrick wouldn't have been able to answer the question himself. The reason he did so many takes is not that he was looking for something specific, it was that he was looking to find something surprising. People misrepresent him all the time, but every interview with him or his actors confirms this. He wanted them to surprise him with something he hadn't considered, and he couldn't say what until he saw it.

Lol poor Harvey Keitel. He always got shafted out of the biggest roles.
8 ай бұрын
I remember at the time that the official reasoning for Keitel's departure was "scheduling conflicts" (which also makes sense, as it broke the world record for the longest continuous film shoot of all time) but this adds up.

I would guess that Coppola would be hard to work for as well. Certain people like a certain amount of chaos around them, like if things were orderly and organized, that just kills any kind of artistic ingenuity, or you can't be as impulsive if all is well.

No wonder Kubrick died of heart failure in his sleep in early 1999. A close friend said he died because he had just finished editing Eyes Wide Shut and could finally relax. So yeah. Dead at 70. Not a young man by any means, but his family probably would have liked to have had him around for another decade or two.

Directors are always looking for something. Sometimes they know what it is, sometimes they don't and won't until they see it. Either way, it isn't always best to tell the actor because then their performance may come off as inauthentic because they are trying to do what the director wants rather than letting the character naturally come through them.
@corpsefoot758

“We were there all day, we just filmed Kris Kristofferson cracking a bull whip over 90 times. That was it.” Cimino built this beautiful, luxurious mansion on top of a swamp. Didn’t matter how much money he spent, or how many great actors filled the cast, the script was seriously flawed and the whole thing collapsed because of it.
