I am a black man. Nothing but love and respect for Gary Owen especially talking to his children about the police. This is what some African Americans have to understand when police approach you. Like Gary I’m white and my wife is black. My kids are definitely exposed to both worlds but out in the world they are black not even mixed. And therefore my wife and I teach them to handle things through the lens of being black. I certainly don’t fully know what it means to be black but I have worked them corners with my black friends and been with nothing but black women for almost 30 years. I’ve seen firsthand the way black folks get treated sometimes and I have developed an understanding that most white people don’t have.

@@mareerogers1114 "They don't talk to white boys/Men that way ever." A white friend of mine got arrested for "public intoxication, trespassing, and resisting arrest", he got beat up by the cop, and had to spend the entire week of Christmas in jail. All he did was walk across the street from the bar to the 24/7 convivence store to get some food. He was a little loud & obnoxious while in the store (which is his personality even when he's not drunk), and a store clerk didn't like it so they demanded him to leave. He said he'd leave once he received the sub he already paid for, or pay him back. The clerk did neither, instead they called the cops on him, and things went downhill for him from there. The people within the small, rural, country town that my family and I live in, are prejudice & discriminatory to any, and all unfamiliar faces, no matter what color they are, and my white friend was from out of town, on Christmas vacation, visiting my family for the holidays. So a store clerk decided to mess with him for being an outsider.

@yousaytomato00005 жыл бұрын
@@Dutch_Engineer_Piff_Dahnk you're reaching here. It is no secret of brutality against blacks from police figures. Dating back to the days of slave patrolling, the attacks of nonviolent protestors allll the way up to the disproportionate arrests during the War on Drugs and even now with Stop and Frisk. A white person will never truly understand or experience the same treatment of their black counterparts. I mean at this point, we could even state it as facts (especially with the amount of research and data that supports the obvious racism) As for the example of the whole "race card"/ boy who cried racism, I mean if you're going to belittle centuries of systematic oppression of this group of people, then there is no argument to be had. Try being a little more sympathetic I guess. Maybe try to see how the brutal American history has essentially pushed these people back decades. I personally feel as if African Americans in 2010's have just caught up to a place where European immigrants were in the 40's. That's just my opinion. Message me if you want elaboration.

The thing about neighborhoods, is me and my children in your neighborhood would make that officer from your neighborhood fear for the worst because of our skin color confirmed by a “ what are you doing in this neighborhood”. I used to get pulled over more driving home in my subdivision than driving up Frelinghuysen Avenue blasted “Das Efx” 😳

President Obama gave the same advice as Gary did concerning the cop situation! A living dog, is better than a dead lion!

Gary is the best example of a USN veteran and human being. I'm not saying he's perfect but he's real about it.

Vlad: So how does slim jesus feel about potentially having biracial kids?
@jamesdayringer7102 жыл бұрын
So how do you talk to your children about wearing the wrong color on the street. Black citizens are more likely to be harassed or killed by other black citizens than by police officers. Saying that, the police really need to start checking their own on how they conduct themselves with the public as a whole.

Hmm not too sure I agree on what he says about disrespect on both sides.....if a cop tells/demands something of you rudely then you can't expect a pleasant reaction from the recipient! You give respect to gain respect!!!!!

Be honest Gary you have some people in your family that don’t like your wife because she’s black..... Listen, we’re use to it now.

Just my personal experience. I’m a white guy, my wife of 6 years is black. We’ve been together for 10. Got together at 18. We live in the South. It took me over a year to bring her around bc I had the thought my family would hate her and it ruin a relationship with someone I truly loved. The first time I brought her to my family, we stayed for 7 hours. My grandma taught her the recipes she had and she genuinely loved the experience. Two weeks later she took me to her family. We stayed 15 minutes. And I was only inside the house for 5 bc as soon as they saw me they hated me. They didn’t care we’d been together over a year at the time. They immediately accused me of only wanting to have sex with her for bragging rights with my “bro’s”. Perception is everything. Then a year later I got a job doing technical work for an internal security company and was making $220k a year and all the sudden the family loves me. They don’t get shit from me. They hate me again. The moral of this stop judging the book by its cover. The second moral is it’s not just you.

There's an old Chris Rock sketch called "How To Not Get Your Ass Kicked By The Police." It can basically be summarized as be polite and don't be stupid.

Saying the Mike Brown situation brought the worst out of people from both sides, is like saying the side that was against slavery, should not have had riots to get their point across. When the actions of one side is incredibly outrageous, you really can't criticize the other side for not remaining calm.
