I caddied for Gary at the US Open in the 70's as a club caddy. I was trying to get on Augusta in the 1980's and wrote to Gary in South Africa because he was a three time Masters winner. Gary called me, said he would love to do it, but was only a honorary member who also needs a member to play with him except Masters week. The call itself was a gesture of class.

A wonderful gentleman, incredible golfer and a fabulous teacher! I still have his animated books "Gary Player's Golf Class" in perfect condition. I can't express how much I learned about golf and hitting different shots from those books, but they certainly helped me get down to a 10 handicap. Especially Gary's bunker play is incredible - he first learned by practicing on the beaches in South Africa - so being in a greenside bunker never worried him and he put the ball in the hole from bunkers many, many times in his career.

We are allowed our opinions. Yes he was and is a great Golfer, no argument. But really as a Person, very much up himself and a narcissist. Nothing wring with getting tips from the best, but do not have to like them. I am an Aussie, and I liked Greg Normans golf, but did not like him as a person.

@@robatkinson5813 Cheater? How so? Any examples from his playing days? I know Tom Watson took issue with him in a skins match, and Johnny Miller accused him of gamesmanship back in the early '70's.

Always been my favourite golfer. You have to read between the lines when it comes to much of the criticism that came from the USA where he took a lot of abuse during every round and bizarre tales would then be created to malign him. Some of this came from misguided politics and some of it was the hostility that many non Americans faced, Ian Woosnam experienced this. In many respects, I like Tom Watson but I think he was very wrong about Player. I consider him the greatest, when you bear in mind how much overseas travelling he had to do in an era when transport wasn't very advanced and he had a large family to look after, his career was phenomenal. I believe Nicklaus never beat him head to head.

It's the South African that people find hard to relate too.
@MrKillahippo4 жыл бұрын
@Paul Simpson your right, there are many countries people can't relate to. because of dirty pasts. bad Ideology and wars can shape the physic of a nation and an individual. Generation who don't live through those times would fine it hard to relate to those who had to live through such things.And then there are individuals that people can't relate to. Bubba Watson, Moe Norman. in fact anyone with talent who is great at something, Not all but some seem to be on the spectrum, can be hard to relate to . Tiger, Dripping with talent, but his Ideology destroyed his family.

I've watched a lot of videos with Gary Player showing golfers how to play different shots.......and to be honest you have to take what he says with a grain of salt. Watch the "plugged" shot again. He tells the crown to square the club face, hit down hard behind the ball with no follow through. He then proceeds to play the shot with an open club face, sliding the club under the ball with a scooping follow through. Jack Nicklaus in interviews has said the same thing with regards to his "fitness" regime. There is no doubting he is fit but in completing everything he says he does every day he would barely have time to play let alone practice, eat, sleep, shit etc. Nicklaus has called this into question in several interviews and I tend to believe him.
