I’m from Philly and have been there with my wife when the Eagles were there. I can tell you the cheesesteak experience is authentic and is a must for anyone who has never had a cheesesteak. As a side note London is a great vacation destination.

My first job as a teenager was as a grill cook making mostly Cheesesteaks. Not in Philly, but in Chicago. We made a variety of styles, including the classic Philly. I loved that job. Making something delicious and watching people enjoy it made me fall in love with cooking. Glad to see another smile somewhere else in the world for such an iconic sandwich.

I'm from New York but my sister has lived in Philadelphia since the '70s (she's still considered an outsider). So I've been to Philly many times and seeing all those Philly themed decorations in London made me emotional. Philadelphia is its own place, its own vibe and until recently only people from Pennsylvania and the surrounding states knew anything about it. The whole state of Pennsylvania has its own identity, as distinctive as New York but different, and even now in my 60s I can't exactly describe it. It's so good to see Philadelphia being appreciated. On a side note, the Italian restaurants in Philly are fantastic too, on the level with the ones in Queens I grew up around. I'm in LA now and I love living here, but you can't find any of all that here. They make the attempt, but no.

As a Philly Lady, I completely agree with your statement. Gary needs to try all three of our culinary delights. Nice to see our Eagles represented there. I would definitely visit that amazing place if I get the opportunity to go on holiday in London. That was a proper cheesesteak, right down to the roll, which is the most important part. By the way, I love haggis as well.

That looks fantastic Gary, what a lovely historical pub, I really enjoy visiting places like that. I did actually visit there with a friend when I was 16 and I am now 77, so don’t remember much of it except it was at night, dark and very creepy ! Although I remembered the historical entrance. The food looked good and the portion size just right - not out faced ! Would like to taste the beef dripping gravy for authenticity as I like to think I’m a self appointed gravy expert 🤣🤣. I make all my own (taught by my late Mum) so I’m not easily fooled 🤣 cheers again👍

I only just discovered this place exists. While I live in Florida I come from outside of Philadelphia and am a lifelong Phillies fan. When the Phillies played in London this past June, I wasn’t able to get there. Though I enjoyed watching I continually regretted not being able to enjoy two of my favorite things: Phillies baseball and a pint of real English ale. But yeah a slice of Philadelphia in London with a Philly cheesesteak! Can’t beat it! Next time I visit England I’ll make sure to stop by. Thanks for this Gary!

There's three key ingredients to a great cheesesteak - the roll, the meat, and the cheese. While that sounds stupid and obvious, as a local tour guide, history buff, and foodie/cook here in Philly, I can tell you even places here, but especially around the world, get this simple sandwich wrong. The roll, which we call a hoagie or steak roll in Philly, needs to be super crisp (not like a 5 day old french baguette crisp) to help trap the ingredients, outside, and super soft inside to sop up all of the juices from the meat (and onions if you get them) as well as the melted cheese. Having the wrong roll is what about 49% of places do to make it a bad sandwich. The meat needs to be paper thin slices. Here in Philly, most legit places, even the local neighborhood pizza/sandwich shops, used Ribeye steaks that have been frozen, and then cut on a deli slicer, as you would with any cold cut or lunch meat. If it's a good cut of meat and properly sliced thin, you can put it down on the griddle frozen as it will only take a few minutes, I mean 3-4, to get to the right spot. You want the meat perfectly medium. No red/pink, but DEFINITELY not medium well or well done. Some places like Geno's or Steve's Prince of Steaks in Philly will literally leave the slices as the are and some people prefer that. Other places, like Pat's (who invented it in the 1930's) will "chop", or pull the slices about into finer and finer pieces. You don't need it to be mince meat thin, but chopping it up, in my humble opinion, gives it a better mouth feel as you can just bite into the sandwich, chew a few times quickly, and boom, ready for another slice whereas the places that don't chop it up, the pieces of meat can be harder to chew and then you end up chewing on the meat long past when the part of the roll, the onions (or other toppings), in that bite you just took have already made it to your stomach. The meat is what about 49% of places get wrong. Hell, I've even scene celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsey use "steak" - and leave the pieces of meat so thick that you'd think you were eating a literal steak on a roll. It's disgusting. The other key ingredient is the cheese. Liquid Cheese Wiz, American (sliced or in liquid form), and Provolone all work. Specific versions of American - like Cooper Sharp, and Provolone give them a much more sophisticated taste, for a sandwich, as does adding a bit of your favorite toppings - fried onions, fried/warmed pickle slices (not whole damn spears), and/or very finely cut and fried peppers (hot or mild doesn't matter). NEVER put Cheddar, Swiss, or anything else on it for the authentic taste/flavor. US Presidential candidate John Kerry was mocked on local/national media back in 2004 for coming to Philly and trying to order one with Swiss....lol. The cheese is usually only wrong about 2% of the time. You can put some ketchup on it. NEVER mustard, never mayo (in my opinion)....and never anything else in terms of condiments. The ketchup, more is okay for kids, should be just enough to help aid in softening up the roll and adding a little bit of acidity and tang to the meat/cheese/onion flavor. You don't drown the damn thing in ketchup once you're 13 or older. And if you ever come to Philly, the proper way to order is "# of cheesesteaks in this style", the cheese style, with or without (wit or witout) fried onions, and then if you want to add pickles, peppers, or something that comes next. Some places have condiments and veggies (besides onions) out for you to add at your leisure. If you don't see them, then would end the order with veggies (if you want any) and then you can ask for ketchup (or not) on it. So a proper order would sound like "yeah hi, can I get 1 (insert "cheesesteak if the place sells more than that", american, wit, fried pickles (if they have them), ketchup please. Then can I get 1, whiz, witout, light ketchup). Boom, that simple.

I was pleasantly surprised to see your early reviews be as enjoyable as they are in your more recent videos. I think you just have a knack for this! My pleasure. I lived in the Philly area for 11.5 years. There has always been two camps, the Geno's and the Pat's. They take their cheesesteaks very seriously there. Enjoy!@@GaryEats

The Philly Cheese steak looked good, but it was missing a key ingredient, Green Peppers! I am in the US and I have never had a Philly Cheese steak without Green Peppers! It's a must in my opinion!

Oh my jebus can someone please get this poster some punctuation it is so unbelievably hard to parse what this person is trying to say without using any punctuation whatsoever I mean who cares what team you like if you are in the united kingdom you don’t have much access to certain american foods so if you can get a great philly cheesesteak there who cares what jerseys are displayed and how can you be an american and not know what wiz sauce is I think most children born these days come out of the womb holding a jar of it oops I almost hit a period there by mistake my body is so trained to use punctuation but I am fighting against it mightily you should look up a pickle and a gherkin if you are going to comment on what Señor Eats is saying wtf are you eating to have never had one of these sandwiches let me guess a whole lot of kombucha am I right oops almost hit a question mark there but I am getting the hang of this now wow it is so freeing not to be beholden to these cursed marks of shackled punctuation haha no dreaded need for a period there either anyways nice video Gary

I’m a Niners fan and I’m always welcomed, even fully jersey’d up! Leave your team “rivalry” at home, most UK NFL fans don’t care outside of watching games, and most Americans are just surprised we follow their game!

Hey Gary n camera man 👨- found you via Danny rate my takeaway, going through. I admire ya honesty, but I’m questioning myself because of the drink level 😂😂😂 did you film the intro at table AFTER you had ya food? Judging by the drink level is only why I ask 😂

I really appreciate that, thank you very much... this was the early days so we might have done lol

Would love an explanation for this. We started the Revolutionary War because we knew that 200 or so years into the future we would create a sandwich that is tasty? 🤔 Does Yorkshire pudding explain WW2? I’m so confused…

wait before the steak sandwich came to the table you drink glass was half full. when its is on the table the drinks glass is almost full. what magic is this. hehehe but it could be you did the table talk and end at the same time. it really just looks like a Subway, have you tried the chicken Ceasar salad one. if you have the app they offered a 12 " for £5. As was that £16 for the cheesesteak. which is once again a lot for it.

Add some lettuce, peppers and jalapenos with some chipotle sauce then you'd have a subway steak melt.

I've been to Philadelphia many times and I must say they make the best cheese steaks I've ever eaten. My favorite is Pat's King of Steaks even though they use a processed cheese whiz. Genos Steak which is literally across the street uses provolone cheese which personally I can't stand the smell of. Then there is Marino Bros and Tony Lukes which is famous for a roast pork sub with broccoli rabe. Everyone has a favorite and one thing is for sure; here in the states everyone agrees to disagree.
