Chips are relatively inexpensive to make so there is no reason to skip on portion. The steak looked excellent and certainly did not need any added sauces. The eggs looked strange and, from your comments, did not taste right. 7/10 seems a reasonable score due to the price. If it had been a little cheaper or the portions bigger it would have been a solid 8.5/10.

Undoubtedly the steak was the highlight, however I think the rest of it , including the strange beef scotch egg, was way over priced. The presentation of that starter versus cost was very poor. Looked like a child had plated it up and i would have expected the egg to be more runny. I think you were very generous with your score and for me , the steak with glaze already on it, was not a great idea. Last moan, I couldn't get passed it being called Monkey Gland sauce. That proper put me off.😊

Welly brigade & dogs would make this a no-go for me. I imagine it to be like The Weyside, Guildford; lovely pub and food, but dogs allowed in eating areas, on chairs etc. Really worth including this sort of thing in the reviews for those who can't stand eating with dirty dogs around them.

The biggest problem I have is that I watch your reviews morning , lunchtime and evening and I’m fancying a steak at midnight or a curry for breakfast lol. I don't know why some restaurants are mean with the portion of chips...really disappointing when you can count the no of chips and it's less than the fingers on your hands 😕 Enjoy your content Great to see the different restaurants and their offerings Interesting to see that it's not the most expensive restaurants offering the best food. I sort of had the idea over the years. That expensive restaurants give smaller portions. Last couple of years there portion sizes have definitely got smaller..keep up the great work 👍 👏

Gary, you mentioned that you will be returning to the York area and I and others have recommended the Rhythre Arms in Rhyther for steak. Not far from there is South Milford which contains a hidden gem for breakfast, the T-Post. Very highly recommended.

Steak without the glaze definitely. Chips in a tin is just a cost saving measure and MUST GO! Scotch egg should be sausage meat ...beef just doesn't cut it. Great review Gary.

Bit harsh to criticise the flavour combination, when it was you who chose to have a peppercorn sauce with the steak. If the glazed steak and peppercorn sauce came together as a single menu item, then fair play. But pretty sure the peppercorn sauce was an optional extra, as did the Monkey Gland. we are held to the choices we make

The glaze already comes on the steak. Yes, you can ask for it without but I feel that defeats the object of the twist they put on their steaks. The peppercorn sauce on it's own was very good and I'd recommend having it but without the baste on the steak.

The egg was like a soft boiled egg with steak tartar in a crispy coating. Unless the beef was advertised as being somewhat raw, I would probably sent it back. I like steak tartar, but not sure the combination with a soft egg and crispy coating would work for me.

I fully recommend that when buying steak from the butcher, get a double thickness steak cook allow to rest and then portion to serve. I can assure you it makes a hell of a difference… Happy eatings people. Another great watch, keep em coming.

Tbh Gary,I’m not wowed.The way I see it,you payed the best part of £46 for a well seasoned steak and a confused starter,yes, the steak looked gorgeous,but then it should be for what you payed,I’m glad you clarified what works and didn’t work on the glaze and sauce combo’s,it will save anyone wasting money on unnecessary sides👍,so for me,I’m not as generous as you have been and I’m scoring it 6/10,it’s the quantity of chips that did it for me,it’s as if on the menu they should disclose that it’s a taster of chips rather than a portion 😡,Great review though Gary👍

I have had Monkey Gland sauce!, I used to work with a lovely fella from Cape Town, and he had a bbq at his house one weekend and he introduced me to the sauce, it's lovely, surprisingly it hasn't caught on outside of Southern Africa, but if you see it on a menu then give it a try.

Hi Gary - looks like a nice place with great garden out back... let's give it a go! South African themed sounds different! Yes, I agree the starter looks poor especially for 8.50. The steak looked fabulous - but the cost was a bit of a shock. I like my peppercorn sauce so would have just used that as a dip for the chips. As you say, light loader on the chips. I cant understand it because a spud costs very little! The 'Monkey Gland' sauce sunds disgusting but intigues me... was it like a smoky bbq brown sauce. If so I have some in the fridge :) LOL. So I'm a 7.5 - only because it was super expensive for a pub lunch. But again, looking at that steak... yea, quality. Nice one Gary, as ever.

Gary that scotch egg looked very ordinary, as a starter it was a non starter, the steak looked really good but what a mean portion of chips. The sauces I would have skipped, being happy with mustard (dijon), all in all it was only OK (just) but it wouldn't be a must go to place, but thank you for giving it a go.

Hi Gary, that steak looked spot on. I wasn't too sure about the beef scotch egg though, not cooked enough for me. Have you tried a lamb scotch egg called a Nargis Kebab from an Indian. Tandoori keema lamb wrapped around an egg, then covered with a thin omelette. Looking forward to your next vlog.

Wow! Beautifully presented food but woefully short order of chips. The steak looked amazing but I would've objected to sauce/glaze being added. I prefer the choice of sauce/glaze or not; don't take that choice away from me! I want the beef flavor of a good steak to shine through unadulterated. Looked like lively surroundings, decently prepared food - I think 6.5 - 7 out of 10 for me. The price is what keeps me from giving higher marks. 😊❤ Keep the vids coming, Gary! Gary, a repeated thing I see in your videos is how well done a steak is. I'd say that steak was medium at best. You've had a lot of "medium rare" steaks I'd have sent back as they are way over that.

The starter looked OK and a tad different, I'd certainly try it. The main looked at bit silly, a bucket of chips, small pans of sauces, all very unnecessary and churlish in appearance. I agree in serving sauces separate, but serve food on a normal warm plate. The steak looked like a lovely cut and well cooked to your instruction. However, that was never 10 oz in weight, 6 or 7oz at best, so a real rip off. Totally agree about the sauces combos, a waste of extra sauces when already covered in one at point of service. Some v good and some not so good bits on this one.

The BBQ sauce would spoil it for me. Other than that it all looked delicious. Chilworth & Shalford are on a Steam train excursion line. Very nice area.

Would not putting hot chips into a metal cup make them sweat? I would, too, expect a 4 star NOT to bring starter and main out at the same time, if it's because you are outside, then you should get a discount. Love Scotch Eggs, but I would not order that one. Because of the small portion size of chips, and the overall appeal of food for me, (or lack of) 6/10 for me. I would like to try more of the African dishes though.

That steak looked bang on but I wouldn't have even tried the Scotch egg. Pink minced beef can be quite dodgy, seems really odd they would mess with such a traditional dish which should be pork.

Bank holidays and eating out Everywhere is always rammed I don’t like having both starter and main delivered at the same time. What was the glaze on the steak, was it honey or maple syrup ? Like you I wouldn’t think you need a sauce if you have it glazed. Not the best scotch egg I’ve seen.

I gave it a 7 before you said it too. For me I wouldn’t like both courses coming together. I am a very slow eater so my main would have been cold possibly and the fact that in the summer the flies would eat it before I did ……it was expensive I think but the steak looked just the way I enjoy it. If it was clear in the menu about the glaze then I would have asked to leave it off and order a separate sauce. So 7 it is , oh and I like more Chios too…..😂😂

Surroundings are very nice, the steak looked great, chip portion very disappointing, the starter well enough said 😊..... overall 6/10 from me Gary.......... 😮

That steak looked amazing. I didn't like the fact that both courses had to come out together. Having to rush my starter so that my main didn't get cold is not my idea of a relaxing dinner/lunch out.

Steak looked great - but I'd order with out the glaze. The scotch egg was simply under cooked - I'm sure it would have tasted better if cooked all the way through.

You have been spoiled a bit by the morrisy scotch egg and maybe using it as a benchmark quite rightly so, fantastic steak the bbq flavour you can’t beat A bit pricey, especially if you have the other half in tow! Oops.. for that money a bigger portion of chips and maybe some artisan bread, job done.by the way Gary I’d love to do what you do it must be fun but this old Diabetic has to be careful 😢

To me Gary i am not a sauce lover with my steak . As i prefer my steak by itself with chips or boiled new potatoes . I think you need to try a Vegertarian scotch egg , i have never seen one yet but i would love to try one .
