How on earth is this practical? I would be too annoyed to dismount every other hill to change gear. And to only have two gears when you have a whole derailleur is just missed potential in my opinion. Adding a simple friction shifter, it doesn't even have to be on the handlebar, wouldn't make the build much more complicated.
@garysprojects8 ай бұрын
@hobbybaschtler7896 I guess it’s something you don’t switch too much. Maybe if you’re in a rush for work you set it to the high gear and on your way home you set it on low. Think of it as just using an old rd as a tensioner , with the option of switching one gear

I'll be honest, I'm not much of a cyclist at 60 years old but I find Gary's videos inspiring. After not having been on a bike for 40 years I bought an Ebike which I love. I was lucky and found a road bike in a dumpster that was actually pretty high end (shimano ultegra, st-6501 brifters, 9 speed, aluminum frame). Had 2 bike shops check it for damage and after getting the ok I spent $100 on new cables, grip tape, tubes. Got a great deal on tires (Vittoria Zaffiro Pro 2 for $20) and a Selle San Marco Concor saddle for $10. New peddles as well. It was alot of fun repairing the broken shifter, cleaning and lubing everything. I can honestly say Gary's videos were an inspiration. I've riden the bike a few times for short distandes but I'm just not physically able to use it to its full potential unfortunately. Was still a fun project.

I think most headsets that have cartridge bearings have the slit on the crown race to make it easier to fit. It would make your steering notchy if you had cage bearings but it's not a detriment with cartridge bearings.
@garysprojects7 ай бұрын
Nice! I plan to use those for all sealed bearings so I don’t have to worry haha !
@flinkerfink7 ай бұрын
Once again a great video. Always enjoying your creative builds and your chilled ways to present them. 💖💖💖 Just about the split crown race: those are kinda common on sealed headsets because you don't need a smooth surface all the way around the crown race for the balls to role like you would on "open" ball-bearings. Sealed bearings already have that surface inside them. And it's heck easier to install and uninstall after all.
@garysprojects7 ай бұрын
Thank you I appreciate that ! That’s great to know about the crown race !! I’ll make sure I use slotted ones for all sealed bearings! Will save me a lot of hassle 😂

@@garysprojects ahahaa, those hundreds of hours lost in my basement... i feel you! you can even cut them yourself if they're not slotted at factory. works like a charm and no tools needed except for a screwdriver or something to "open up" the crown race while mounting it on the fork.

Surly used to make a Dingle fixed cog that paired with two chainrings would give a on road/ off road gear. No derailleur, just loosen the wheel and switch and off you go. Or use a modern Sturmey Archer internal gear hub with disc brake mounts.

How does it keep chain tension ?
@davidbee95638 ай бұрын
@@garysprojects You would combine a small front ring with the larger rear cog and the larger from ring with the smaller rear cog. So there is only smsll difference in chain length to adjust. The type of shim I found useful, were the ones you use on doors, to lift them from the ground at the hinges (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitschenring). Unfortunately i couldnt find an english translation, but the wiki pakes has a picture which should hopefully help. Regarding the crown race, while i personally never did it, as long as you use cartridge type headset bearings you can use those split crown races, and even cut a slit in them yourself (I've seen Spindatt do it to great success). Makes installation and removal muuuuuch easier. Obvs won't work with caged/ball bearings 😉

Carbon frame?
@garysprojects8 ай бұрын
Yes ! It is pretty light compared to my other mtbs , the tyres def add a bit , but feels solid. Feels whippy and fun to ride 👍

Any problems with the chain falling off the front chain ring over bumps? I'm asking because I always have a problem with this.
@garysprojects8 ай бұрын
Nope zero problems , chain hasn’t fallen off once. Maybe your chain is too long not sure ?

Hi Gary, I noticed you setup your bikes like in Europe (or US?) with front brake on the left side of the handlebar which is the other way around in Australia?any specific reason for this?
@garysprojects6 ай бұрын
So that my stronger hand is on the rear brake , in that way, I don’t go over the bars in a pinch !

Hey great job Gary! What frame size is it? You might've mentioned it, but I couldn't find it in the video.
@garysprojects8 ай бұрын
Thank you I appreciate that , it’s a 57cm tt ctc so I would say medium/large

I tried the same shift from 3x to 1x cranckset, the problem is the chain dropping continuously. Are you having this same issue?
@garysprojects8 ай бұрын
Nope no issues at all ! Maybe your chain is too long ? Not sure though

Why not just use a 3 sp 16 19 23 freewheel and spacers, with a friction lever on the seatpost?
@garysprojects8 ай бұрын
This weighs less, Jks these are the parts I had on hand
@ThisTimeTheWorld8 ай бұрын
@@garysprojects I like playing with bike parts. I once made a 1sp tensioner out of a rd with only the jockey wheel, and no cage, and used a spoke and the barrel adjuster to hold it
@garysprojects8 ай бұрын
Nice! Sounds cool. I’ve used that spoke technique before too 👍
