Let me say this about the Patti LaBelle "outing" accusation. For those of you accusing Patti of "outing" Luther Vandross it's people like you why gay men and woman stay imprisoned and closeted. Clearly she was baited if you saw the interview. After Luther's stroke the person by Luther and his mother's side was Patti. Patti sang at his funeral. Throughout the 80s and 90s Patti and Luther were inseparable on TV and off. (How soon we forget). The interviews are documented. We live in the age of google ....don't be lazy. If you know anything about entertainment interviewing and baiting guests for salacious gossip that interview was a CLEAR indication of it. Patti LaBelle was a guest on "What Happens Live" with a question thrown at her about her friend Luther Vandross' sexuality (we all know how messy this show is but many dont so they come in getting blindsided). Why was Luther even brought up outta the clear blue as a topic? Let's use common sense. It's a Andy Cohen drama filled show!

How dare they use Patti, especially after leaving Patti out of the entire documentary except for the short clip with Andy! Luther went backstage at the Apollo as a young man and marched right up to Patti, Sarah, Nona, and at the time Cindy Birdsong and declared he was indeed determined to start a fan club for Patti Labelle and the Bluebells while simultaneously serving this new venture as its President. Patti was family, and Mary Ida Vandross, as well as Luther, had anything and everything they could think of in part from Patti! If anyone should've had the most time, it would be Patti first with commentary from Nona, Cindy Birdsong, and any archived audio or film of the late Sarah Dash at the the beginning of this documentary! I know personally first hand just what a support Patti was, particularly in the last months of his life. How deplorable! 🤬💩 Also missing was Bette Midler who adored Luther and still does! Something was off here, and it was evident when the documentary skipped over his formative years in which Patti Labelle and the Blubells were a HUGE part of! 💔

Plus Vlad TV asked many of Luther's celebrities friends about him and his sexuality and they spoke on it but no body got on them for speaking of it. Sadly Cindy Birdsong has been ill since 2014 and is in a nursing home.

Okay the infamous Patti LaBelle appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen" occurred in 2017! Where was all the pearl clutching then? The producers of the documentary did her dirty. They interviewed her for the film then didn't use her footage because she requested final approval. They CHOSE to solely use the "Watch What Happens Live" footage. No mention made of the assistance Patti gave to Luther after his stroke. And the assistance she gave to his mother after his death. Patti did not outed Luther all she did was confirmed what we already knew. Only the sensitive gay people is mad and speaking on it. Get over it we love Luther music and there will never be another. It was no secret!

Confirming something is in fact outing someone. There's a difference between us "Knowing" and her actually knowing. Yes, she outed him.

@traceymitchell6763 the seriousness of it is irrelevant as it doesn't affect us. But the fact still remains, while her intentions don't seem to be malicious, she still was wrong. She's fallible just like any other human being and made a mistake. Just because we love Patti doesn't mean she's above reproach.

Yea i dont feel like she should get any blame about that. People beeeeeeen talking bout Luther. All she did was share a small tidbit about it and was very respectful and genuine with it. People these days love to villianize people for the smallest shit. I could see if nobody knew or hadn’t said anything. 🙄😒

Why are folks of the past surprised. The generation today could see it blindfold that he was a pocketbook. Patti should sue them.

Not everyone knew LV was gay and the majority of his fans truly believed he was straight because that’s how he chose to portray himself to succeed. Moreover if he had come out ,it’s unlikely he would have been successful. That being said no one can deny just how incredibly talented he was and he deserved his success…..

Luther didn’t and wouldn’t have come out publicly during that time for the same reasons that so many didn’t back them, the rhetoric and climate around being gay was toxic. His language about his sexuality was typical and not surprising to anyone who was gay around that time…it was a survival mechanism. But, we knew. Had he lived (and his mother passed) the climate has shifted dramatically enough that he most likely would have come out just as many other gay man of that era have done since. This latter era was when Andy (a successful out gay man) asked Patti a serious question which was predicated on it being known that Luther was gay. Andy didn’t need to and didn’t ask Patti if Luther was gay he already knew that because it was known. Nor did Patti bring up the subject or decide on own her own to gossip, instead, she answered a question posed to her about a dear friend in a thoughtful and respectful way. Patti has had a number of celebrity gay friends over decades even when it was toxic to do so and for that I admire her unceasingly for supporting and being there for them.

I’m still tryna figure out why the hell this documentary aired on CNN……out of all places🤦🏾♀️ I missed it and didn’t hear anything about it prior to air date…..and yes I’m salty cause I can’t find it anywhere

I saw that episode where "messy ass" Andy Cohen asked her about LV's sexuality which I feel if anyone people should be pissed at should be HIM because if LV wanted everyone to publicly know about his sexuality he would've put that information out there. However, for Andy to question her about this and LV has passed on was very disrespectful and invasion of his privacy which by Andy being a gay man you would think that he would respect that.

I adore Patti LaBelle’s vocal talent and and seems to have a bubbly aunty vibe, however she had absolutely no business talking about his “sexuality” if he never really said anything about it while he was alive.

Leave Aunti Patti alone. Stop acting outraged over something she confirmed SEVEN years ago (TWELVE years after the man passed). Being gay does it tarnish anything, and we all thought so anyway. It would be one thing if she said something while he was alive behind his back , or told details about secret dalliances, but she didn’t. He was a beautiful artist that we were lucky to have.

But Luther was gay. It's not a secret. He didn't come out because of his mom.
