Called Pla Saba in Thailand, about twice the size of UK mackerel, very popular here. In 1979 when I was 12 my parents took me to Kinsale in Cork, Ireland. Dad took me mackerel fishing a lot that summer and one day in the harbour there must of been over a million mackerel spawning, apparently the only time it ever happened. In the space of two hours we caught enough fish to fill 5 black rubbish bags up, man were we sick of eating mackerel by the end of that week!

Lovely! I'm from Blyth originally but now live in NZ. I fish in similar situations (off the rocks) and often use a fly rod and berley to bring the fish in close. Great sport with our local varieties of Mackerel. Maybe food for thought if you like fly fishing, too?
@fishingintheukgarywood5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'll have to give that a try. I enjoy a bit of fly fishing. Do you put the berley in a bag and tie it to the rocks or just throw bits in at a time?
@1998TDM5 жыл бұрын
@@fishingintheukgarywood Depends on where we fish, if their is current, a bag (onion sack) or bucket with holes drilled in it tied to a rope and anchored on the rocks gives a good spread. If it's really calm we make a slurry of burly and seawater in an ice cream container and throw it around the place with a spoon. Keep the oil from tins of tuna to add to your burley. Fishy catfood works surprisingly well.. A small, weighted, Klausers Minnow is a good fly to get depth. I don't ever recall standing on Blyth pier in shorts and t-shirt, must be soft. lol.

Hi Gary, Just wondering what setup you would recommend for Mackerel as far as braid strength/leader etc. In this video you use mono but in later you use braid. Do you prefer braid now and do you always use leader or same line all way through to feather rig or lure? TIA
@fishingintheukgarywood Жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, with my lighter spinning rod I mostly use 25lb spiderwire stealth braid with a short 15lb amnesia leader with a 28 or 40 gram metal lure for mackerel fishing. sometimes ill cut down a sabiki rig or mackerel rig and use two of the feathers with the lure on the bottom of them it usually works a treat. I mainly use braid now because of the casting distance and better bite detection but it does have some down sides to it, if the braid touches any rock or abrasive surfaces while under tension it snaps really easily and sometime you get problems with knots. Mono on the other hand is a bit more forgiving. Hope that makes sense mate.
