That's a great dog. I have an old Slant/Fin boiler with a similar Honeywell control and right after I bought my house, intermittently the pump would run, but it wouldn't fire. I took out the circuit board and resoldered everything on it. Turns out it was some cold solder joints on the board. Also cleaned the contacts on the big relay. It's been over 10 years and no more problems with the board.
@SerenoOunce
@SerenoOunce Жыл бұрын
Very common on these to have cracked solder joints. Last one I worked on had *FIVE* joints that needed reflowing. If handy with a soldering iron a DIY fix can save hundreds on the part alone. These controls might take ~$25 to manf, the markup is plain criminal. Even if the transformer or relay themselves do fail, just wire up some off-the-shelf replacements in an adjacent box and you got a cheap, permanent fix.

That's quite a common way to branch off from main flow and return from a manifold in The UK. Except there would usually be either 8 or 10mm (5/16" or 3/8") microbore pipe from flow manifold for each radiator, and same back from each rad to the return manifold. We don't use base board, always rads. Can get blocked though in those small pipes, often at the manifold if system isn't nice and clean with good concentration of corrosion inhibitor mixed in with the water. Thanks again for another great vid.

You were right, first thing I noted is the probe was dry, yours was too, heat conduction paste makes the control react to changes in temperature faster, if a small part of the sensor is touching the well, it will adventually work, but if the boiler runs away, your held liable for all damages. Honeywell even included the stuff in the box with instructions, they're off the hook.

Maaaan…this was so easy to do… every time contractors come to my home, they always jack up the prices once they see my house…I’ve had to start figuring out how to do a lot around the house… This was A LOT easier than I thought… My molex plug, which was connected to a damper, was causing the Aquastat relay to intermittently not fire up the boiler…had to keep jiggling it to get it to work…probably bad soldering… I was able to fix the problem by simply replacing the aquastat relay… Pro Tip: take a picture before AND after you’ve removed every wire…then just scroll backwards through your pics to reattach them to the new aquastat… Saved myself a lot of money.

Any part can e replaced, its just a matter how much time you want to spend. Its probably a generic part that you can find on the internet, somewhere. Its also probably just soldered onto the board. If you have some knowledge of soldering, and a decent soldering iron, this can take just a few minutes to an hour to fix.

+bg147 Relay contacts are plated, so files are much too rough and will remove the plating. While the relay would work for a time, the contacts would arc and pit away to nothing, and could start to get hot. There's a special tool called a contact burnisher you could use, but if the contacts are too damaged, it just has to be replaced. www.crawfordtool.com/burnisher_gc.html

the things have a weak transformer and are known to easily blow. I replaced a little over a year ago and it already blew. I wish there was a competitor. Honeywell doesn't even handle these anymore. I have one very similar except it's the L8148A1017 as seen as he is rummaging through his truck. It keeps dying apparently a poor design. The current is 4yrs old and dying

Question for Steve or anyone else who can answer. I have heat, but noise is coming from aquastat relay, sometimes loud. If I hit the metal, it goes away. Do I need it replaced? Want to avoid expensive service call. Just had it cleaned and guy said everything looked fine. Of course, noise started 4 days later. Any help would be appreciated :)

Thanks, found out it was just one of the wires rubbing against something inside the aquastat box.

Nice video, Steven. Are you concerned the silver contact goop might harden over time? Baby looks good in gray.

That is a weird set-up but it works, you got her choochin' now mama! lol. As for that "di-electric/heat transfer paste" you would put in on the sensing bulb if the well that it is going into was constructed of stainless, aluminum, steel or any dis-similar metal to prevent electrolysis and corrosion of the bulb and increase sensing speed. If the well is made of brass or copper the pasted is not used.

+Paul Marini Just before the holidays in fact, it was on a "Hydrotherm-Sabre" boiler, steel well inside cast iron exchanger pitted and slowly leaking into the control damaging the control. the bulb was literally welded into the well, replaced control and well (with brass of course)...Royal pain in the....

If the switching relay inside the aquastat is bad why would you change the entire aquastat and not change just the $15 relay?

That thermal compound hardens over time and you have a hard time getting the sensor out.
@MrBrymstond
@MrBrymstond 7 жыл бұрын
If you do use it, apply it on the bottom tip. As you put the sensor in it should be touching the bottom in deep and at a angle on top towards you.
