Radiation dissipates very quickly from the air and water. It is heavier elements, generally, that absorb radiation and have a long half-life. This is why lead is used to block and absorb radiation. There can be issues of particles landing in the food, air and water and in some cases a filter can purify it. Doing a little research as to half life of different kinds of irradiated materials is a good idea. There are some very cheap options that might be useful in certain circumstances like a safe room for the family and pressurized air tanks. Soviet civil defense bunkers worked on this principle.

That’s very interesting! I know of 2 farmers who were working in a cattle shed with slurry storage underneath , when the slurry was being mixed before being pumped out it gave off methane gas which at high levels become odorless and is extremely dangerous! The first farmer went into the shed and was overcome by the gas and the second guy immediately ran in to rescue him but he was also overcome by the gas and both died! I think these would be an essential piece of kit for a lot of people!

When I was a young boy our school teacher made us all read a book; "Z for Zachariah" a post-apocalyptic science-fiction novel by Robert C. O'Brien (or Robert Leslie Conly). That book haunted me, and it haunts me still to this day. I have come to the conclusion that sometimes... survival isn't the best option. If you're going to use or rely on a piece of kit like a Hazmat Suit then I strongly suggest reading the book and aquainting yourself with the idea of putting it on every day when you go outside. Also think about what others might do to take your kit from you, and understand what it truely means to be a survivor with all that entails, like the daily struggle to find uncontaminated resources to continue your existence, and the total isolation, not being able to afford to trust anybody. Also as a semi-professional but budget option consider repurposing SCUBA breathing equipment. As a final Emergency Last Resort, Learn how to fashion 2 Emergency face masks from a Womans Brazzier, this was practiced widely during the first and second world wars.

Nuclear meltdowns are one of those things that the public is overly concerned about but shouldn't be, especially in the US or Norway. If you look at the numbers, being afraid of a plant meltdown is less rational than being afraid of dying of COVID at a young age. I'm going to tell you right now as a Chemical, Biological, Radiation, and Nuclear Specialist in the US Army that unless people are THOROUGHLY trained in usage of this gear and how to operate in environments where gear like this is necessary they will die horrible painful deaths while thinking they're safe from harm. It's not something you can buy and expect to use proficiently, it takes practice and drills. Not only that but how to detect these hazards and decontaminate is another matter entirely. The average person who doesn't deal with this on the daily, their chances of survival are extremely slim to none. There's a reason there's a world wide ban on chemical weapons. All I'm saying is if you're one of those doomsday preppers or have taken an interest in this kind of thing, you need to get classes and instructions on this. You wouldn't try to go scuba diving without at least being told how to use the equipment, similar principles here. My last words of advice is your better off staying clear of any reason to use this and leave it to us experts.

@mylesdrake2949 3 жыл бұрын
@@glensmith1266 it's not rocket science but it is super meticulous work and people generally fuck up because they rush. It also still requires training much as the same vane as driving a semi truck. Given time most people can do it easily enough given training, but you just throw someone with no experience or training on the wheel they're bound to crash and burn, that is if they can get out the parking lot without blowing the engine. So no it's not rocket science, but it's still advance skill that needs training otherwise people with my job description wouldn't exist.

@@mylesdrake2949 yeah I do agree training is necessary for a lot of things in life. Maybe we should all be trained though cos you wouldn't want a future world just full of soldiers would you. As a species humans need a great variety of people to survive on earth.

@@glensmith1266 Dude you're making me facepalm, let me break this down Barney style. If I'm saying people need to be trained, and that they should seek training one could assume this training can be accessed in the civilian sector right? It's not like the military runs nuclear reactors or Chem plants right? When there's a Chem spill from a tanker or train or a building its usually civilian contractors or emergency services fixing the issue right? So one could assume it's not just military who knows how to deal with this right? So it wouldn't be just soldiers surviving right? Does all this make sense to you or are you lost in the sauce still?
@mylesdrake2949
@mylesdrake2949 3 жыл бұрын
@@glensmith1266 also you need a variety of people to make society work as it is, you don't need a lot of "special people" to survive tribal style. Also I'd take a hundred of my brothers and sisters in arms over civilians any day. Not only are they trained to fight and survive, but to work as a team and put the whole before the individual. Then going further they know a specific set of skills that pertain to their specific jobs in the Army whether it be medical, engineering, logistics, etc. on top of what I already mentioned. There's plenty of variety in skill sets in the military to survive and thrive as a society in a hostile potentially uninhabitable area, I mean that's what we do in a warzone anyway.

Pkease consider learning about decontamination, in so far as using kidde pools and brushes, etc. As it uses more than one oerson to decon, the whole family could learn this to help each other. Also, in the US, some years ago one could take free haz mat 40 hour and 80 hour certification training funded by federal money and given through local labor unions, as ling as the union had room for those people.

I remember reading about that Chernobyl accident a little bit not long ago (it has been a few months). I think Sweden got some of that toxic cloud, but idk if Norway did or not. I am sorry you had to experience that if you did. Idk if Norway has military surplus stores, but the U.S. does (at least where I live). I got some great gear for 50-80 percent off regular price! Also, I have tested some of the gear in the field, and it does seem reliable. I am still using my gear two years after purchase. Kind of small timeframe, but I guess it has lasted this long.

Bjorn, 2 most important research points are: 'donning & doffing respirator routine' -this must be done every time you apply the mask. You must also learn a precise 'decontamination routine' specific to the threat, otherwise you will contaminate yourself when removing/re-applying dirty equipment. The equipment will only help you, if your routine is faultless. I hope you never need it! Keep well & in good spirits :)

You'd be better off with enough rolls of plastic and tape to seal off enough living space and supplies for 2-4(?) weeks, and a bicycle charged battery bank that run 2 ventilation fans, with a HEPA filter on the intake. A suit and mask is really only useful in a get-back-home kit your car, or if you for some reason have to go outside to keep your sealed off space running. Don't forget a decontamination zone. Zipper plastic doors are sold on amazon.
