The exact issue I had when learning last year. Was shown in a diesel, was taught to raise the clutch without gas but then I changed instructors and her petrol car I just kept stalling all the time. I had to do the test in my own car in the end

with petrol engine, you need to raise the clutch smoothly or gently (compare to diesel)

in a diesel you can get away with it with good clutch control. in a petrol. almost no circumstances can you get away with it. maybe on a flat surface but no way in an uphill. its not good practise to not add gas beforehand but it can be a useful tool when you perform manoeuvres when you are a learner

I love that he decided to teach me this way, you get a better feel

Thank you so much! I was releasing clutch first and then pressing the gas. As you rightly pointed out, take off is not very smooth and it's a bit nerve wrecking during bumper to bumper traffic - I have to adjust clutch and gas quite a bit to avoid stalling. You are a life saver.

Always good to give it gas, because some manual gearboxes do have a slightly springy clutch pedal. You're spot on for downhill driving! Don't always have to do so! Love this channel bruv!

I always go with both. I keep the clutch engaged whilst starting up the car, then put the car into 1st gear when I’m ready to move. Then it’s somewhat of a seesaw motion with the gas and clutch. Clutch rises at the same pace as gas is applied. This is done for both petrol and diesel vehicles. However diesels can get away with less gas initially to get you started (great to know in the event of ice)

Honestly, it finally just clicked for me when I started doing the clutch before gas instead. It gives me so much more confidence because I can get close to the bite point while still on the foot brake, and then just give it a little gas and ease off.

Usually it would make more sense to add gas right before the bite point. Even if it’s basically an inch away, just let out the clutch some; then add gas while you’re not quite at the bite point. Essentially the same as adding gas first before even letting out the clutch

Is there any reason why our driver's instructor do not teach us this? Have you got any idea? They always say release the clutch only, do not press gas on a hill. I tried this clutch only in a public road with the driver's instructor on a hill, it only made me look stupid and embarrassed because i stalled 8-9 times. Causing a traffic jam.

How about if you lifted the clutch just below the bite point before the car moves add gas then lift to the bite point is that just as acceptable? I do it as it reduces the time to lift the clutch up and less chance of rolling back

The way i learnt it was Foot on brake and clutch, then raise the clutch to biting point while right foot is still on brake. Then, while your left foot is on the biting point, keep it very still and add gas and slowly lift clutch. But this takes practise.

I did a couple of 'unofficial' driving lessons years ago, while my mate's dad was planning to become an instructor. He told me to add gas first to about 10mph then raise the clutch gently ("by the thickness of a pound coin") Just done my first 'real' lesson with an instructor and he taught me to lift the clutch first then add the gas. Obviously I stalled a couple of times in doing so. Is there a reason/benefit to raising the clutch first? I'm wondering if he'll eventually tell me to apply gas first and just wants me to get a feel for moving off slowly with the clutch only, as that is probably better when crawling in traffic?

So my instructor has a petrol car with an electric hand break. I have been taught to bring the clutch up to the biting point and press the gas pedal to release the hand break. I always remove my leg from the pedal because that is how I have been told. I didn't stole the car but now I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly or not. I will ask next time, but if you have any tips, it would be nice to hear them. Thank you.

@@collinslfcWell, the car rolled back and came to a halt where it was less steep. An experienced driver who was with me drove after that but this time he had the chance to build up the momentum to go past the steep hill, so no clue as to what can be done in such a situation. Though there were no vehicles at the rear this time, it won't be always like that so need to know what needs to be done.

Any advice on how to add the right amount of gas before bringing the clutch up? Learnt (and passed last week :) ) in a diesel car and petrol cars seem to give 3000RPM or more at the lightest touch of the gas. Setting 1500 or less in the diesel Fiesta was so much easier, where it feels like tickling the pedal with a small feather would do the same in a family member's 1.6 petrol. Thanks as always Chris!
