Episode 5 and we are discussing whether to put gas into the van or not? I (Anna) prefer the look of a nice modern gas hob, but Jon is set on an alcohol stove........ Please comment and offer some advice below :)

My thoughts about the alcohol stove are the limitations you're imposing on yourselves for future modifications . Will you want a grill or oven at a later date ? Will you want a gas water heater ? Also how much fuel do you think you'll use ? How much precious storage space will that fuel take up ? If you miscalculate , depending on how long you go for and where you are ? How easy is it to procure more fuel "out in the sticks" in a foreign country ? I think I'd prefer "messing about with different connectors/adapters" knowing I could locate a gas supply with a quick Google and our 30ltr lasts us a good 6 months of reasonably heavy usage most wekends with the odd fortnight thrown in for good measure. Admittedly I know nothing of alcohol stoves so I am a tad biased against them I suppose . Ultimately its your van , your build so your choice . Our first build we had a 4 ring gas hob/oven/grill combo . Undersung 30ltr gas tank . All fitted and connected up by myself BUT had it checked by a professional campervan gas fitting company. Just for peace of mind . The next build is going to be entirely electric . With a sizable battery , 1200ah+ (24kwh) and hopefully at least 1kw solar array . All pie in the sky at the moment but those are my goals . Good luck . Fattrucker

Had an origo in my first camper. Lovely piece of kit but way more condensation than gas and occasional headache when running for longer times. You can see the ppm rising fast on co detector. Lpg now.

Thanks for the info , I’ll definitely bear that in mind in my landrover . We have decided to fit the lpg cooker in the van .

Though to explain...I have a 460ah LiPo4 from Frogstar, a 2kw invertor and 410w solar with Victron MPPT.

Apart from the danger of gas, You may have trouble refilling your propane tanks as the valves and fittings differ from country to country and sometime small propane tanks or adapters simply aren’t available at all. Where as with meths you will find fuel at every hardware store in any country, As a general rule where ever you can buy paint you can buy meths that will work with the stove at the same place world wide.

Totally agree , I had issues on my boat sailing the Med . I’m thinking of fitting a lpg cooker and keeping the alcohol stove under the bed when needed . Best of both worlds.

I am thinking of gas as the gas is handy one can get an oven later down the road ... with the gas bottle all that one needs is the enclosure so the gas dosent seep in the living quarter but out at the bottom or side ...as the legend said they are many ways to skin a cat ...in my drawings plans sketches I have segregated the living quarter from the rest kitchen and wet room at the back and the front for chilling and sleeping but it's on sketch it's still a theory though my main concern is condensation / smells so to keep it out in the back with the fan and the doors open it should do the trick but also one can do a pull down table one can also use the back doors as walls all that's left is a roof a canvas to go on the top of doors or a pull down roof that's on the roof sketches were drawn on the concept that the bed is 2 meters long or there abouts 180 ×120 and the rest is for every thing else so to have space an L shape sofa bed with the swivel should be plenty ...I see a lot implementing the front for shower and food so in essence it's a cat 😂
