Gasket or not to gasket, that is the question. Sealing with Lube Locker.

Welcome back everybody. In this episode I touch on a commonly debated subject. Using a differential cover gasket or RTV. I know that a lot of people might disagree with me on this one but that's ok. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this video. My son and I enjoyed the father/son time in the garage.

I'm glad I found this video! I have been struggling to remove the leaking cover on my 1980 Chevy 14 bolt differential. I finally got it off yesterday and then it took all day to remove the old Fel-Pro gasket (no silicone) from the cover. I had to apply 2 coats of paint remover to soften it enough to scape off with a utility knife. It was leaking all the way around. I was going to put it back on with silicone sealer but I hate using it for gaskets because I don't trust that it won't leak. I didn't know that anybody made a gasket like the Lube Locker. Thank you for making this video.

I ordered this lubelocker gasket yesterday..I originally put a fel-pro paper gasket on my mustang but it won't stop leaking..torqued it also but no luck..got a feeling the lubelocker will be the answer ..thanks for your video.

Yes it does suck! I've had those gaskets in for a while now and no leaks!!

I think one of the biggest concerns I have about the RTV is when it oozes out inside the cover and becomes foreign objects in the oil. If it gets ground up by the gear that would increase wear and may get in between the traction-lok friction pads

Yes and people tend to over do it with RTV.

Lube locker is all I run! I have never had 1 leak, and I have reused a Lube Locker 3x's before replacing it.

Gasket, every day. It wasn't that long ago that using sealant as a gasket was considered the lazy mechanic's route. There's a reason for that.

@@TheRightLine some are using Rtv and a gasket. I bought both and Rtv cost more than the felpro gasket.

@@MC-hs4mf the problem with running both is the rtv etchs in the metal so it screws up the gasket over time

I understood that rtv gets attacked by ingredients in the gear oil and that is why a gasket is preferred, I don’t have any experience to share though - I am about to do mine I am gonna get a gasket

The other thing I find with off-roading is that when RTV is used, if the lip of the cover gets caught on rocks, it will start leaking. Every time in my experience. With a gasket, no. Thank you for watching.

Personally, I like copper spray gasket on the gasket to the cover to get it to stick to the cover. I don't put anything on the LubeLocker.
