Irreversible was one of the most horrifying movies I ever watched. Not because of the blood, the crazy cameras, the gore. But just because of that one scene in the underpass. Because girls, we all have been to places like that in our life, feeling unsafe, paranoid, easy prey. For me this was spot on - and I never want to see this movie again.

That was such a clever scene. It inspires helplessness in both men and women. Women can imagine it happening to them and men feel helpless to stop it. It's a horrifying 7+ minute ordeal. The way Noé got us to identify with the victim so potently is testament to his skill as a filmmaker and it's what makes that scene one of the most harrowing in cinematic history. That scene as the axis of the film like the centre of a clock positioned exactly halfway through the film is so poignant. I hate mindless sadism like hostel and much of contemporary horror. I love clever films like this. Irreversible is truly his magnum opus imo.

There is a fascinating detail that nobody talked about in the underpass scene!!! About midway through the scene we could see a silhouette of a man coming in and we immediately think may be he will come into rescue , but he simply goes back the way he came!!!! Alex doesn’t see him but we do, we are the ones who are supposed to feel the hopelessness of that situation we,the audience, who really got assaulted in this scene. An incredible detail.

That's exactly the point I got. What happened to her can't be undone. She lived a semi-normal life before, with good moments in it too. The viewer is supposed to juxtapose the last 1/3 of her average life with what happened to her and after. She will never live like that again. The scene may be the same, but she won't. Things like this happen all over the world everyday to women and worse thus it's not a film people can't separate from reality, and the rapists often get away with it. It's just... a very harrowing film.

While a lot of those feelings dulled over time and I've ended up seeing some movies I swore I never would again... this one's just as strong as it's always been. Obviously the first half is brutal and the middle scene is one of the most unpleasant things I've ever watched, but it's really the second half that gets to me, because you're seeing every single mistake they make knowing exactly where it will lead, and I was sitting in my dorm room wanting to shout "NO DON'T! Great video.
@jacobyoung7292 жыл бұрын
Just watched it for the first time a few days ago and I had the same experience as you. While I've seen other filmmakers with wild styles that really appeal to me, Noé really knows what he's doing in terms of pushing psychological impact with his filmmaking. I've been thinking about the movie non-stop since I first watched it and have rewatched a few scenes (party scene, beginning of the Rectum scene, laying in bed scene) just to see the fantastic style again, but I totally don't know if I could watch the entire movie again soon. A true masterpiece, but probably not great to watch for some; I mean it is quite horrifying in the moment and ultimately extremely depressing. But, it's depressing in a way that really sticks with you and impresses you, not that just solely bums you out and that's it.

I had read something online about this movie that I had found pretty interesting, about how it plays with the rape and revenge genre by showing the story backwards. In the rape and revenge genre, we can distinguish 4 stages : introduction, assault, search for the assaulter, and revenge (and eventually a 5th one showing the afterwards). The usual emotional way the spectator goes through in this genre will be : they get to know the victim, build empathy for them during the introduction. Then, the assault scene will activate them emotionally making them angry, because "someone" they know is being attacked. Then, they are implied and motivated by the search for the assaulter, and the revenge feels deserved and is appreciated by the spectator, as it is a bad character getting what they deserve. SPOILERS With Irreversible, we start with this very violent and graphic revenge, we build no empathy for Marcus and Pierre since we don't know what motivates them and they just look like some angry and agressive dudes, amplified with these musics and sound that makes you anxious and nauseous that were explained in this video. then, the search for the assaulter doesn't catch our interest, since we already know who he is and how he will be punished, and once again, we see an angry and agressive guy, assaulting a witness because he is upset that she speaks spanish and not french and assaulting a taxi driver while calling him racial slurs, but this time Pierre is "on our side", trying to reason Marcus and convince him to go to the hospital see Alex, wich makes us even more frustrated that Marcus keeps going. When we found out about what happenned to Alex, the scene is gruesome, her face is barely visible under the floods of blood and we are told that she is in coma. It's immediately followed by this assault scene, and as we still have these horrendous images in mind (clever point), we see this scene of extreme violence, and we are somehow in the same position as Alex : we are being forced into an unbearable situation, that we can't stop, that is never ending, and that will stop only when the one submitting us to this situation will decide so. We are sitting there powerless to help, and already knowing the terrible consequences of this. So when we see these characters being happy, having fun and loving each other, we feel nothing but sorrow, and even if the film ends on the most hopeful and joyful note, we can't help but superpose the image of this blood maculated face on the smile of this woman finding out she is pregnant.

I'm a big fan of Noé. First time I saw "irreversible" with a friend of mine , we'd watch each other when the film ended , realizing we had been totally hypnotized falling in that vertigo of time being inverted... I mean , I never ever felt those unbelievable feelings of being taken in a modified understanding of normality. I know I'm probably unable to find the words... English not being my mother tongue and missing so much practice... For years I've asked many people about this awesome effect... You're the first i found talking 'bout that induced confused perception... "Irreversible" caused a huge scandal being thrown at Cannes , particularly for the ultra violent rape. This scene is uncomfortable... Because in fact , filmed by Noé , it provokes to a certain point , feelings we're not supposed to have...and that's creepy !

Excellent Breakdown! I've been a fan of Noe since Enter the Void came out On Demand in 2009, and as Visually Crushing as they can be you can never escape the feeling of a story being told in a unique way that no one would ever dare to do. Irreversible had a mythos before I ever saw it and it carries on til this day, and your analysis got under its skin like it does Toit's audience. 5/5

A thing that this film made me feel was a feeling of emptiness. When it finished with Alex in the park I was expecting more but not in a way that I was dissatisfied but I was waiting for another horrible act to happen. One thing I noticed about the second half of the movie. Notice how Monica in the movie doesn’t smoke and gets seemingly annoyed at Vincent using drugs, since she is pregnant. Not so much of an important point but interesting ”foreshadowing”(since it already happened) in the movie.

What a great analysis! Although I have to add that, interestingly enough, the camera zooming in & out (what you refer to as heartbeats) could also be interpreted sexually - as in penetration (maybe even foreshadowing the climactic rape scene). Given the violent nature of the film, I find this duality of the camera movements as symbolizing both sexuality & life to be very appropriate. It's also interesting to note that the sexual encounter presented in the film is contrasted with Alex's existence - it quite literally ruins her life, not to mention the pregnancy... This film is a truly irreversible experience
