Gastronomic Big Wall Climbing in Patagonia

Tyler Karow, Imanol Amundarain, and Cedar Christensen pulled off a team free ascent of the South African Route on the East face of the Central Tower of Paine in Patagonia, Chile in January 2023. Despite their typical vigilance for going light, they opted to splurge on quite a few luxuries including excess amounts of wine and a mini cast iron oven that they used to bake muffins, empanadas, and pizzas daily while living in portaledges. They spent a total of ten days on the wall after an initial two days of fixing ropes from the ground.
This 4000 foot line was first climbed in 1974 by a South African team and first freed by Sean Villnueva O'Driscoll, Nico Favrese, and Ben Ditto in 2009 at a grade of 5.12c. This was the second free ascent of the route.

It always amazes me with the amount of equipment some climbers bring with them, especially on a multiple day climb. Making pizza, cakes, quiche, cupcakes, and whatever else is top notch.

I totally disagree. The entire movie consists of 2-5 second clips, which makes it a nightmare to try and focus on. A person just begins to study a scene and BAM...it gets ripped away from you. It gets annoying really fast. I could barely watch a minute. I think they're heavily influenced by modern tv and cinema which does the same crap. They think their gonna grab ya by being real flashy with quick changes and moving camera angles....turns out to be more of a distraction than anything. Its hard for me to watch anything new because of this. anyone notice....i knew the differences between the different THERE's...i knew which one to use, and when, grammar wise, and how to spell it. Its hard to believe thats a damn rare thing these days, along with the different two's. If 75 million people do a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.

Thank you algorithm for showing me this. Huge respect. I can never figure out how they can keep track of all the ropes they are using, plus they are 3 person in a tent, hanging on the mountain as if it was a family camping trip to the lake, eating muffins and cheese. Every now and then I love to go into the woods and hiking, but I'm afraid of heights but can imagine the adrenaline and reward climbing those small gaps must be something out of this world. Yeah, we are all scared of heights to an extent. Its part of our natural good instincts to have a healthy respect for, and fear of what can hurt or kill is.. The main hardest challenge in rock climbing , is not physical strength like youd think. Its learning to control your mind, and training yourself to be calm and focused , in intense , fearful , physically draining situations - You have to learn how to channel the adrenaline, and use it to your advantage/ to give you strength , focus, and energy (as opposed to panicing , confusion, and freezing up). As you train to climb, you get better and better at staying calm and focusing in scary , intense situations. Including you get better at overcoming fear of heights , which is a challenge for many climbers.

I'm gonna hang from this comment. I'm from Chile and altought I like extreme sports I don't like people coming to my country and going to places that are unique to us and places that don't even us touch. This wasn't so nice at all 14:19, why don't you go elsewhere(your country) and destroy nature?, you also left the mountain full of holes, this is a place that shouldn't be intervened. Not sure if it legal or not (I'm gonna find out) to do this climbing there but I don't really like it, this is a very unique place for us. I also don't want this place to become a new everest where there's trash and dead people.

When I started climbing in dangerous, big wall conditions, all of a sudden all of the things that were normally stressful just weren’t anymore because my life wasn’t on the line in those situations. I think we did 7 the day we topped out after our only haul pulley axle bent so bad the wheel didnt spin. We were down so low on food thinking we’d be on the wall no more than 4ish days and with that weather every day we were on the wall, it turned out to be six total. Super beautiful. Such talent and skill. Funny and all inspiring. This sort of shared adventure and example of all encompassing team effort, work needs to be viewed in our kids educational lives. And cooking, am well impressed with what these young lads achieved in a tent hanging on the edge of not very much! Just wow. Thankyou for sharing. 😀 💜

Wow. Best one yet. Thanks so much for making the extra effort to film your adventure and share it with us. I especially appreciate the footage of the falls--nothing white-washed here, where super-humans cruise virgin rock with no apparent effort!--it's ten times more inspirational to get a sense for how hard this stuff really is. Thanks too for being so explicit about your environmental efforts. The culinary aspect deserves its own independent comment! ;-) I'd put this video up against any other climbing film out there; Jimmy Chin's shaking in his TX4s. Thanks again...
