Vehicle Damage Factor The vehicle damage factor (VDF) is a multiplier for converting the number of commercial vehicles of different axle loads to the number of standard axle-load repetitions. ESAL gives the number of axle loads which is obtained by multiplying frequency with corresponding EALF values. An equivalent axle load factor (EALF) gives the damage per pass to a pavement by the type of axle relative to the damage per pass of a standard axle load. Standard axle load is a single axle load with dual wheel carrying 80 KN load. Four types of axles - Single axle with single wheel on each side (65 KN), Single axle with dual wheel on each side (80 KN), Dual axle with dual wheel on each side i.e. tandem axle (148 KN), Triple axles with dual wheel on each side i.e. Tridem axle (224 KN).

Pavement fails due to load repetitions, so we need to find the axle load values for design. Axle Load on pavement varies but Standard Axle is fixed so we use Standard Axle for computations of design traffic. There are 4 types of standard axle 1. Single axle single wheel on either side -65kn 2. Single axle dual wheel on either side -80kn 3. Dual axle dual wheel on either side (Tandem)-148kn 4. Triple axle with dual wheel on either side Tridem-224kn Nothing mention we use 80kn as standard axle load . EALF- this factor converts axle load to standard axle this tells us that 1 axle is equivalent to how many standard axles EALF=(Wi/Ws)^4 wi =axle load ws= standard axle load ESAL= this converts the total axle into the total standard axle ESAL= ΣN*EALF where N= frequent axle load Vehicle Damage Factor (VDF)- this is used to convert vehicles to standard axle VDF= ESAL/No. of vehicles surveyed Commercial vehicle. are those whose weights more than 3 Tonne

Vehicle Damage Factor is that factor which is used for converting the number o commercial vehicles of different axle loads to the number of standard axle load repetitions. Homework Questions- 1. Equivalent Single Axle Load = 7.775 2. Allowable Repetitions - 2 Millions 3. Equivalent Single Axle Load - 420 4. Equivalent Single Axle Load - 1840 5. Vehicle Damage Factor - 3.7807

Hello Aspirants, Like and share the post. Keep watching. Happy Learning.
Homework numerical :- 1. ESAL = 7.78 i.e. option A. 2. Allowable Repetitions = 2 millions i.e. option A. 3. ESAL = 420 i.e. option C. 4. ESAL = 1840 i.e. option B. 5. VDF = 3.78.
