in this example minimum hamming distance is not 2, it 1 if you are not taking parity bit during xor and it is 3 if you are taking parity bit during xor. one more thing it can detect all odd bit errors, as you said earlier, not only d-1 bit error

minimum hamming distance shoud be 1 for your given code word, when we perform xor operation for 0000 and 0001.

actually we perform xor operation of valid words which are formed when parity bit is included so acc to your given situation it will be 0000 to 00000 and 0001 to 00011 so as you can see now it will give haming distance of 2. Hope this will clear your doubt.

Sorry. I figured my mistake. Hamming distance is the number of 1s in the data received after XOR operation. We do not have to convert it to decimal. Thanks though.

For hamming distance why have you not considered the parities for 0101 and 1000?
sir you said that min hamming dis is 2 for these nos , but when ex or of 0001 and 0011 is 0010 means hamming distance is 1 , min hamming distance is 1. please correct me if i am wrong.. you only took the bits without the parity bit so should we take the parity bits while counting the hamming distance or not please give solution.

As explained, this method can only check for changes in odd number of bits. So, as an example for even parity: Lets take 0001 1 with the last bit denoting the parity bit. In this case if we change the parity bit to 0, then we get 0001 0 But the data word 0001 0 is itself not correct according to even parity check as it has odd number of ones.
