The historic Penobscot River fell victim to the rapid damming of Americas rivers. Fortunately a massive effort is underway to reverse that.
We paddled 25 miles over 2 days with the Penobscot Nation's Tribal Historian and learned about the rivers tumultuous past. The Penobscot River Restoration Project was a collaborative effort to balance fisheries restoration and hydropower production in Maine’s largest watershed. The result, 2,000 miles of rivers and streams opened up to sea-run fish like the Atlantic salmon and shad. Hydropower production was maintained to complete one of the nation’s most innovative river restoration projects.
