I'm trying to learn this for a shanty band in San Francisco. We've been making appearances at Hyde street pier. I'm the accordion player. I have listened to 39 versions of this beautiful tune and you all are very talented and I'd say this is among the better versions. I wish you all the best and please don't stop singing and making music. You're really good at it.

This a nice version of this song, in that it is not sung as a dirge, but with joy. The description of the song is not accurate however. It is not a shanty, or "chantey", if you prefer. Shanties were rhythmic work songs to increase the efficiency of tasks such as raising the of sails or lifting the anchors of ships. Nor is the song traditional. It was written by Hugh S. Roberton, (yes, Roberton) who was born in Glasgow and was a classically trained musician and founder of the Glasgow Orpheus Choir. He died in 1952. Still good though.
