The choir I play in, we did this as our solo at the local handbell festival this year. And of course it's a lot of fun to play. But the great thing about KZbin is that this gives me the chance to sit back and listen to someone else play it -- what fun!

7 1/2 octaves of handbells are available from Malmark G1 to C9 but few groups have that many.

Our choir goes from G2 through D8 -- about 5 1/2 octaves. Figure out how many people you have in your 4 octave choir, then add enough people for 2 more octaves (6 octaves being the absolute largest number of bells they could have), then tell me if your numbers add up to anything close to 27 people. I'd love to know how they break the bells down to keep 27 people busy.

It seems as though they are doubling (maybe tripling?) bells -- perhaps in middle to low-treble range (2 or 3 sets of handbells). A local church near me has so many people in their handbell ministry that they own at least one 6-octave set, two or three 5-octave sets, and several 3- and 4-octave sets of handbells, in addition to multiple sets of handchimes as well. Yes, they use them all in large massed-ringing events at their church. They have ensembles from very small children all the way up through senior citizens...and every combination in between.

What do you mean? You don't understand how they can play music? Each bell is assigned a single note like D, C sharp, E flat, etc. and each person has two to four bells (or more depending on the size.) Or do you mean that they can't tune like brass or wind instruments? No, they can not. But it doesn't matter because they don't change much in tone. However, you won't see a Malmark and Schulmerich bell being played together because they aren't matched to each other.

It's possible they're using more octaves than your choir, maybe? My handbell choir uses four octaves, I believe, but they could be using more.

I'm wondering how they have enough bells for 27 people in one choir. We have 13 people in ours. And granted, we have one person cover G2 through A3; and our people at the top handle both the sixes and sevens. But even if we added 2 more people at the bottom and 4 more at the top (the maximum number I could imagine putting in the group and still having enough bells for everyone not to get bored), even then, we'd only have 19 people. So how do they get 27????
