It's the final play of the 1787 World Math Championships. The talented Gauss faces a challenging question from his math teacher. Will the young student show up his teacher, or does he still have lessons to learn?
I wanted to explain how to sum the numbers from 1 to 100 in a fun and creative way. This dramatization is based on a true story.

Thanks for the comments! Some of the lines that didn't end up in the video... "Statistics show Gauss is undefeated in prime years when his score is a prime number. I'm going with the odds that he's going to come through" "He's erasing a lot of his work. That's gonna leave a mark in the morning." "The ruling on the field stands. After you write the numbers, you must establish yourself as a non-mathematician or the proof is considered incomplete."

I've always found it simpler to add to 100 (disregarding 50 and 100, for now) with 1 + 99, 2 + 98, etc. until 49 + 51. there we have 49 sets of 100, plus 100, plus 50, for a grand total of 5050

Really. I was 200 yrs late. This is my discovery: s=a(a+b)/2b where 'a' is the limit till the sum will add up to and 'b' is the 'skip': e.g. If b=2 then. s=2+4+6+8+10+... If b=3 then. s=3+6+9+12+...
@aym9869
@aym9869 8 жыл бұрын
According to your notation: a is the last term , b is the first term ;b also is the skip (the change per term) So the right formula should be S=[a/2b][a+b] Excellent , but the first term is not always equal to the skip. In another notation N is the number of terms, a is the 1st term, d is the skip. The general formula is S= [N/2](2a+(N-1)d) = [N/2]*[first term+Last term] You are not late by 200 years, Because In 499 AD "Aryabhata", an indian mathematician-astronomer gave this method . After that it was introduced by some Islamic mathematicians like "Ibn al‐Bannāʾ al‐Marrākushī al-Azdi", (December 1256 - c. 1321).

When our math teacher in high school asked us the same question, ... I didn't write anything down initially on paper, ... I did it all in my head, ... and realized there were 50 sets of numbers that added up to 101 (I had never heard of Gauss, or his formula), ... so I wrote down 5050 in a very short time. Our math teacher walked over to my desk, smiled and shook his head "yes", as the other students looked on with dismay. After some time, when the others were given more time to figure their "additions", the math teacher had me go before the class, and explain how I came to my conclusion. Like I said, I was totally unaware of Gauss, and his formula/equation.

In a very rare flash of smartness for me, I figured out the answer in a couple minutes (I tried it before clicking on the video). What I did was (let's say S is a sum function) S(5) = 15 and S(4) = 10, I figured there must be some simple relationship, I tried a few like (N-2)*(N+1) which worked for 4 but not 5. Eventually I came to (N+1) * (N/2), and saw that it worked for 3-4-5-6, so I assumed the pattern would continue and did 101*50 to get 5050. The answer made sense to me because I figured it had to be less than 10000 which would be 100^2, and because S(10) was 55 I suspected the answer for S(100) might be around 5k. So surprised and proud I am that I made this dumb comment.

Hello I have a Question: I wanted to know what the sum is from the sequence that starts with 300 and ends with 750, BUT i have to count every fifth integer. Example: 300, 305, 310 ….. 740, 745, 750 I know that i multiply n pairs with the sum of a pair. But how many pairs are in that sequence. I need to know how many millimeters of material i need to order for a hydraulik press. Each number represents a block of steel. The number itself is the height of a block. And we put these blocks inbetween the plates to calibrate the press.

Clever idea. I have to say though, I learned that proof in like 7th grade. It was pretty cool though. I learned the geometric proof of it though. You make them all boxes with width 1 and push them next to each other. You pretty much get a triangle with sides n and n+1, so yeah.

So presumably this formula would work with a random set of numbers: 25 to 176? What is the sum of the numbers 25 through 176?
@swatitripathi9663
@swatitripathi9663 4 жыл бұрын
No Steven, this formula will not work for any random set of numbers. It will only work for consecutive numbers starting from 1 (Natural Numbers). However, the question you have asked that, what is the sum of numbers from 25 to 176, can be answered by using this formula. We'll define this unknown quantity (sum of numbers from 25 to 176) by: x First, we'll find the sum of numbers from 1 to 176 by using the formula discussed in this video [n(n+1)/2] which will be denoted by: S₁₇₆ and from then we'll subtract the sum of numbers from 1 to {[25-1]=24} by using the same formula denoted by: S₂₄. We used 24 because if we use 25 instead, then we'll have to add 25 too. ∴ x = S₁₇₆ - S₂₄ = [176(176+1)/2]-[24(24+1)/2] = [176(177)/2]-[24(25)/2] = 15576 - 300 = 15276 We can generalize this. The sum of consecutive natural numbers from n to k is equals to [k(k+1)/2]-[n(n-1)/2] (or) {[k(k+1)/2]-[n(n+1)/2]}+n

I still think the QED is a requirement so the refs were fair. However, for modern times, they are not being as strict.

This is a fun one I did it in my head and got the answer faster than you got there I saw that one and 99 = 100 and then just ran up the whole thing until I got the 50 realized it was 50 pairs so 50 pairs of 100 plus 50or 5050.

Is there any formula yo sum numbers from a number to other?
@scmtuk3662
@scmtuk3662 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. The formula for the numbers k to n (k being the first number of course), will be literally the sum of the numbers 1 to n, as usual, but then you'll subtract the sum of the numbers 1 to k. For example the sum of the numbers 20 to 30, will be the sum of the numbers 1 to 30, and then the sum of the numbers 1 to 19 will be subtracted from that answer. The general formula would therefore be (n(n+1)/2)-(k(k-1)/2) You can also write this as (n(n+1)-k(k-1))/2 For example ((30x31)-(20x19))/2=(920-380)/2 = 540/2 = 270

I like most of your videos. This one is boring. I'd rather listen to your voice without the "sports" thing. BTW, I learned to solve this when I was in grammar school.
