Gauss Piano

This piece is called "Gauss Piano" since all the notes played by Pianoteq are driven by two random normal (i.e. Gaussian) white noise sources. Four knobs on a Novation controller are used to vary both the spreads and the center positions of the Gaussians, one that controls the note value and one that controls velocity, in order to obtain a form of controlled randomness. The note values go through a chord quantizer before going to Pianoteq. The piece is performed -- and the Pianoteq VST3 is hosted by -- VCV Rack, a virtual modular synthesizer.

Très beau ! J’imaginerais facilement cette musique dans un film genre ´road trip’ ou un peu spirituel avec des paysages grandioses. À partir de 6:15, je voudrais être moi-même dans ce film. On ne dirait pas une pièce en mineur, pas du tout tristounette. Après l’avoir écouté 2 fois, j’ai juste envie d’aller la réécouter encore. Bravo !

Usually I find calculated music rather uninspiring, but I think your contribution is successful and has something hypnotic about it. Gave me the idea that maybe one could try something in the direction of brownian motion. Good luck with the contest! :)

Thanks so much! Hope I make it into the round of 12 ;-) Brownian would definitely be interesting to explore too, but I think in the end it will always need some input from the performer (or some advanced modulation), or else it might get boring quite quickly. Cheers!

I looked at the source code, and although it appears similar to a uniform distribution, it actually is a normal distribution. When comparing with a uniform distribution using a scope, there is a difference. github.com/VCVRack/AudibleInstruments/blob/v1/src/Kinks.cpp#L42
