I love the pace set by this choir, slow solemn reflecting the mood. Most choirs rush through this song in a celebratory manner when in fact this is more of a lament

Yes, I'm in total agreement with you on the slow tempo chosen by the Gauteng Choristers in their superb rendition of "uNonqhawuze". You've hit the nail on the head; it's a deep lamentation of the Xhosa nation upon realizing that t
"She said our fathers' cattle will return" "The ancestors are to be respected" Just had to clean up Google translation of the last two lines of the first paragraph

Beutiful melody! Sang by powerful voices! But painful lyrics. And a terrible story for Xhosa people at the false prophecy of Nongqawuse!
@teressaoatlhotse85477 жыл бұрын
what happened in the story?
@Lerumles7 жыл бұрын
Teressa Oatlhotse Nongqawuse's community was sick and tired of being oppressed by white people. Nongqawuse then received a vision from the spirits of ancestors that the only way to get rid of the oppressor is to kill all the cattle and burn the fields of grain. When the oppressor sees this, they will be terrified and driven into the sea. Then the ancestors will return the killed cattle. The story continues to say that other your girls bore testimony to Nongqawuse's vision. They then killed the cattle and burnt the fields. The oppressor never left, the community has been impoverished ever since. The song then says "the men wept because the wealth of the community has been squandered and burnt at the words of Nongqawuse. It's painful when I hear an oppressor singing this song. EISH!😭😭😭

Mpho Lerumo so why is this song so popular and seemingly sung with so much joy? now I'm wishing I had never read your explanation lol

There is a lot that need to be uncovered on the story of Nongqawuse intombi kaMhlakaza. At her age, there is no way ikomkhulu would listen to the nonsensical story. Xhosa people at that time would discuss everything that has to do with the nation at the great place. Advisors and intellectuals would be called to analyze the story. We hear non of that happened regarding the story of Nongqawuse. We grew up being told that Nongqawuse saw White men along the coast who then related the most folsified story of the cattle killing. One thing interesting is that we are told that was the arrival of White people in the Cape, when we know that the cattle killing happened in the early 1800's not in the 1600s. There is a lot of inaccuracy in the story that we have been told. The reality of the matter is that there is a possibility that the cattle killing was done to eliminate live stock that was infected by a deseas that came through cattles that were brought deliberately by British settlers to spread it across the Cape.

Shouldn't they be crying singing about one of the worst travesties to befall an African nation? The smiles I find disturbing considering this is a sad sad story.

This is a sad song, as it is narrating a sad story. Why it is sung by happy faces always baffles me. But I guess even in funerals, there's laughter.
