International Male knew who their audience was. My closeted grandfather was living with us when I was 17 and I found his stacks of Play Girls. (he claimed he collected them for the articles, but come on.) He used to tell me stories about his army days, about how "it's normal for men to do things with each other."

During Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell, more people were kicked out of the military for being gay than ever before. A guy I know who served during that time had a theory that the military never really cared that there were gay people serving as long as they were discreet about it and didn't give the military in any way a gay image. He felt they went after guys who looked, acted or sounded gay more than guys who had lots of (appropriately hidden) sex.

I lived in Monterey CA for two years (1980-82) where there were various military bases, Fort Ord being the largest. There was one gay bar in Monterey (After Dark) and military from all of the bases hung out there regularly. For the two years I was there, military police never once showed up. Keep in mind this was many years before "Don't ask, don't tell."

Small world. I was in Monterey at the Navy weather facility 93-95 and the After Dark was still there. Met a Army guy there, studying at DLI, and he was so not my type but I agreed to work out with him because I was always small framed. The DLI gym was great. I think even nowadays, regardless of how accepting it becomes in military or other places in life, people in the closet will rarely disclose to those that are living in the open. I thought coming out would open more connections when i was in high school in the 90's, it turns out coming out was a very threatening thing for the closeted types that they wouldn't even risk talking to me. Years later i've learned from former classmates that were in the closet that there was quite a bit of activity that would go on in the background. Luckily most of my friends at the time were from gay youth / support groups i began to attend at 15.

It doesn't surprise me though that there is more same-sex relations in the military even among heterosexual men. It's the same as other single-sex environments like prisons or at least mostly single=sex in the case of the modern army. In some cultures unmarried women have been sequestered and were therefore invisible to men and unobtainable as sex partners. In such environments, male adolescents were often sought after as sex partners by adult men. especially by young unmarried men. Ancient Greece is a particularly well know example. A more recent example is the same sex culture that has existed in Afghanistan under the Taliban where all women are hidden behind their burqas. One Kandahar told the newyork times that he likes boys, but likes girls better but they cannot see the girls to see if they are beautiful. In such cultures, the choice of adolescent boys as partners reflects the facts that these youths, lacking beards and adult musculature, are closer to women in appearance than are adult men. A lot of these men in ancient Greece and Afghanistan are not homosexual in the sense they have a strong preference for males when given the choice of sexual partners. What these cultures do demonstrate is to the degree to which sexual desire and sexual behaviour accommodate themselves to a restricted range of options, just as they do in prisons and other single sex environments today. In animals, sexual interactions between same sex partners (male mounting another male or female mounting another female) are observed in a broad variety of animal species. Often, these behaviors are expressed only when a suitable partner of the opposite sex is not available due to captivity (zoo or other captive populations), or when a skewed sex ratio in the population, or the presence of dominant males is preventing access to females. These behaviors do not represent a true same sex preference but serve as an outlet for sexual motivation in the absence of suitable partners of the opposite sex. The only case known of spontaneous same sex preference is in a sheep population in the western part of the United States( this has no been found in wild sheep, only these domesticated rams). It could be argued that because you're dealing with domesticated species you're therefore dealing with genes being selected for female fecundity which have a byproduct of causing a certain amount of same sex behaviour among males, a sexually antagonistic effect. the same theory that has been suggested in humans.

I used to to business with a very large insurance company in Omaha, and had to go there several times on business. I was probably mid-20's. Much to my surprise, there were several lesbians - partnered and totally accepted. At least one was in a pretty senior position. Not 'out' but not hiding either. OK, I thought, lesbians here, but no gus. And then one night I went over to the gay bar (there were at least two close by) and there the was male contingent from the same firm. People I did business with every day and would not have expected, from my age to like 50; including a guy who I'd thought was very very cute but uber straight. Ex-military, buzz cut blond, my age and in way better shape than me - took him back to my hotel. I remember the next morning my contacts were stuck to my eyes - I was just too damn exhausted by 4 a.m. to take them out. I missed the breakfast meeting and sort of stumbled into the mid-morning. And nodded nochalently at the night before who annoyingly looked like he'd gotten the full 8 hours - never knew how he managed to look so friggin Geez.

I can confirm I’ve had similar experiences. I was active duty army and deployed to Afghanistan in 2011-2012 for 9 months. I was on a combat outpost with ~130 US infantrymen. After about 2 months, everyone was horny. I’ve had many late night hookups in Strykers and showers from “married straight” men. And it was them pursuing me. Everything was on the down low. It’s wild how everything you think you know about someone goes out the window when you’re cut off from sex. I was the medic for one of the platoons so I developed a good rapport with everyone. I’m guessing it’s because of that comfortability factor they were ok with hooking up with me

Everyone has this fantasy of Middle Eastern men, but definitely not Afghan men (at least not the ones from villages). The Aussies gave next-door-guy vibes and they have nice packages. Bulgarians have some in-between the left swipes, but there was this one Bulgarian who can get away with destroying me. But it was pretty open when I was in, and my experience is that you're either dealing with a military bottom, or an insufferable top who thinks he's too good for everyone else.

@@pneron2032 And you ain't the one to ask for a higher standard when your syntax is all over the place. So before talking about "English", fix your English first. Then MAYBE you can convince me to follow a standard you actually follow. Commas are not the only thing missing, and there's also rules for commas.

@@pneron2032 Also, you're gonna tell me that "commas vary from country to country"? So what exact standard do you actually want to follow? Cause your broken English tells me a lot about your non-existent standard. "In English, next time please" is how a 50-year-old immigrant man from Mexico or Southeast Asia would say it.

When an American person comes here and buys a house and says it's super inexpensive it's like a slap on the face for Mexican people who can't afford a house because the market is now for foreigns and not nationals. Please come to visit, but don't be part of the gentrification cycle, allow us to have affordable houses for us.

Life for LGBT people in countries like Afghanistan is already difficult. And then, the US comes "spreading democracy" and things get even worse. If the US wanted peace in the Middle East all it would have to do is NOTHING. They financed the taliban against the Soviet Union. They did that.
