Having lived in China for nearly six years, I have seen a change in attitudes towards homosexuality. The younger generations are accepting of it. The older generations oppose it. As with all social and cultural change, it takes times for attitudes to change. I suspect that as the older generations die off, the generations that replace them will be more accepting of homosexuality in their society. My high school students are mostly accepting, especially with some of their gay classmates who are "secretly open" with them. Applying a western attitude to try to understand the complexities of Asian/Chinese sexuality just does not work. Family is very important. History and past memories are not. Foundation of the society is about money and "face". Conservative views are held highly here. The government is the strong arm, but allows great latitudes in people's daily lives (as long as it does not interfere with party or government). Social status is even more important in China than western nations. All of these, and many more considerations need to be addressed in time. Therefore, I suspect that in 20 years, China will be more willing to consider gay marriages and gay lifestyles. Activists who try to push the timetable forward to benefit their personal lives and agendas threaten the natural change that occurs. The one benefit that China has that can spur the change faster is that China does not have an overly religious society. In western countries, religion was and is the defining factor that blocks further advancement of gay issues. By 2050, China will be a much different nation, as will it's culture and society.

It's a sham. CGTN's main mandate is to portray China in a positive light. However, I will say this: in China, there are no Christian overhangs that taint the debate around gay issues. While most Chinese view homosexuality as abnormal or contrary to tradition, rarely anyone in China views homosexuality as an abhorrent sin that must fought off at any cost. Even though most Chinese may not accept homosexuality, rarely any of them will physically assault someone for being gay.

Here in America, when I ask where homophobia comes from, people most often give me the reason is religion. What is the main reason for homophobia, heterosexism, or accompanying bigotry in East Asia where Abrahamic religion and culture are less common?
@euphoricatheist66944 жыл бұрын
The amount of times I've had to point this out to the 'homophobia only exists 'cus muh Christian imperialism!' people. No country in Asia today has what the Western world calls gay rights. To date, Taiwan is the only Asian country to legalize gay marriage just last year, and even that was to their reluctance - the majority of Taiwanese voted against it, but the Supreme Court overruled. To date, Taiwan is the only country in Asia besides Israel to legalize homosexual adoption (again, to their reluctance). The LGBT movement is still almost exclusively a Western phenomenon.

When I first went to China i saw many school children boys and girls that are considerably touchy feely with each other and even adults... Women walking hand in hand, arm in arm, sleeping head on shoulders generally doing things that can be perceived as rather sexual, which i thought was quite unusual...a grown women stroking her friends hand or a grown man walking with his arm around his friend. My main point is due to culture intimacy between same sex is quite normal and is probably for a good majority of Chinese people their first instance of intimacy as it's not really social accepted to date or have a girlfriend until after studies are complete which can be upwards of 21 years...There are definitely a lot of people with no sexual experience and curiosity paired with the progression of the world in acceptance and technology this is inevitable. Problematic or not you cannot tell people who they can love. For family and government this is a double edge sword. Now they are banning men for appearing too feminine. Although it is generally accepted to respect your parents in China, parents need their children more than the children need them...that is a fact....parents cannot afford to disown their children and must accept their choices.

Most of modern China's homophobic attitudes were imported from the West or Japan during colonisation which propagated the belief that homosexuality was a "mental illness". Neither the Chinese major belief systems of Buddhism or Taoism have anything against homosexuality, and although Confucianism would have frowned on homosexuality because the act did not produce children it did not have anything against the act itself. This is why many men in Ancient China had male lovers if they also kept a wife to have children with. I think the Ancient Chinese view of homosexuality is similar to that of pre-Christian Ancient Greece whereby homosexual men were tolerated if they were functionally bisexual and of course, in both societies women were considered vastly inferior to men. The main purpose of a woman's life was to birth children and serve men so women were married off at a certain age and had their sexualities controlled by men. Men of all cultures view women as a resource and dominate them with their strength so a woman who did not make herself sexually available to men was considered offensive -- this is why lesbians cop so much shit and why many men kill women for rejecting them.
