I couldn't believe it when I heard this. I'm 77 years old and listened to this song when I was in first and second grades. Her aunt and uncle lived next door to us. I would agree, but the one thing that leaves me questioning this song is the idea of portraying a hippos like a large dog or some other pet. This is in no way true. Hippos are actually extremely dangerous animals and kill more people than some of Africa’s greatest predators like lions.

I really like the orchestration on this song. The bassoon and piccolo work really well. Nice singing too with the hilarious words clearly understandable, and the trumpet fanfare. It's wonderful fun.

I think this song is VERY significant around Christmas time and it’s not due to the fact that I am absolutely crazy in love with hippos or that this song was created to raise awareness about the first hippo being brought over to the states. What is significant is a persons (mainly children) unrealistic expectations for Xmas gifts. It’s like asking a child what they want for Xmas and they name some pricey or unattainable gift.....I want a hippopotamus for Xmas. I ❤️ this song and I think it is very cute and witty😍🦛
