gbaHD | The Open-Source GBA Consolizing Kit
The folks over at Consoles4U have released a GBA consolizing kit based on the open source project called gbaHD from Zwenergy. This kit offers some features we haven’t seen on a GBA consolizer kit before which are very cool. So, how does it compare to the competition, let’s find out!

That's one crazy kit, I thought for sure it was a GBA-SP based one instead, but this was unexpected. I quite like this new-ish trend of grabbing the important parts (like CPU and RAM) from a dead console and making a new one basically, that way you achieve 100% (or as close as possible) game compatibility, no emulation errors and so on while still getting all the advantages of an emulation console. Gotta say we're right on the edge between just using the FPGA to simulate the hardware itself, and the normal consolizers that just add stuff to an actual console.

I’m so happy to see more open sourced projects put out there, especially for this use case how cool!! I wonder if anyone in the future will make a browser plug-in so one can play their console-ized GB/GBA over the internet when away from home. This would also be a great work around for allowing un-jailbroken iPhones to play that library of games, and another way to crowd play longer grind-ey games like Pokèmon. As always love your crisp clean videos Tito, thanks for another!!

I always say this but this is the best modding channel. High quality editing, very informative, step by step instructions, pros and cons, and comparisons. A lot of the time if I know how to do a mod I have a macho nacho video playing just in case I missed something. I especially like the more complex mods even if I won’t do them it’s good to know how they work and see what can be done.

Like the others, I love this, especially how small it is. While the soldering is the most difficult part for most of these setups, and I speak as a less experienced user, your technque is interesting. It looks like the flux helps keep the solder on the tiny pins so you can do a quick swipe over them with the iron, and it looks like it won't bridge as easily as I've seen happen otherwise. I know it's sped up in the video so it might just look easier than it is. That's something I wouldn't mind practicing myself

Another great looking option. I'm just kinda sad that there still isn't one with 240p RGB output for us CRT fans. Now, the gameboy player with gameboy interface is of course always an option but it gets annoying having to boot into GBI using a homebrew solution every time. It would be so nice to just have a dedicated consolized GBA with 240P output and support for SNES controllers.

The soldering in this modification is daunting. You’ve certainly reached professional level with your solder skills. This is not a mod for many people I would imagine, making a niche market even more so. This is something that will make me hold onto the broken GBA however. An interesting project. Surprisingly it's quite affordable (at least, compared to other kits... still oddly expensive given GBAs can be cycle accurate emulated from like 60$ onward...) but that's more to do with the working cost in terms of microsoldering. Still, it seems to offer the best quality, and it's a nice form factor.

Great kit just wish the power button wasn't so recessed into the case. It's the one gripe I have with the kit. It's hard to get at but other than that this is an awesome gba consolizer. The web ui firmware updater alone makes this the best kit out there in my opinion!
Жыл бұрын
It always breaks my heart when you see people throwing away old consoles and systems because they are broken. Older hardware like NES, SNES, N64, GB, GBA etc are getting so old, that they start to become rare. Not only rare if you want a working model, but rare in general. This is why we need such projects and things like this. We have to utilise, recycle and upcycle those old devices as much as possible to preserve them.

@@Bos_Meong in that regard, the PSP, psv, ps3, ps4, 3ds, new 3ds, pc, and raspberry pis I have can also emulate. Possibly even the ps2, but I've not looked into it. And I'm fully down to emulate on a steam deck if I ever get one. But there's something special about the quirks of original hardware, even if they're modified to fit a different screen. Besides, I grew up playing a lot of these titles on the real thing and emulation just isn't quite the same.

I don't remember if you said it already, but the reason why the solder pads for the RAM chip are so long is because some GBA's (including the SP) uses a smaller version with the same pinout. Edit: also really hoping the Spartan Boards get cheaper due to the shortage slowly resolving. I'm hoping since they used to be not in stock at all.

Interesting kit. I always consider it a valiant effort to salvage components with signs of corrosion on the leads, however... I've experienced over several decades that corrosion can sometimes migrate through the leads of an IC, which may eventually cause damage beyond repair. Tito could you run a GBA videos on one of those? If so could you do a review of how those run on it? That's definitely an advantage over the GB player if so!

These are cool if you're into DIY, but the analogue pocket seems make these projects less important.

True. It sucks you have to wait a long time to get one though.

This is preserving original hardware, the pocket is only emulating that hardware. While it's still a great option for game preservation, hardware preservation is a different thing all together.

For me part of the allure is assembling myself. It's like going and buying a model car/plane kit from the store when they already sale toy car/planes off the shelf.

That’s what I’d do if given the choice. Eventually emulation will be the best option as time moves on. And it’s the same price and plays more games. This is more for enthusiasts who know how to solder. I don’t know how to do it unfortunately so it gets too expensive when comparing options.

Analoge Pocket has no soul imo, real hardware is more fun to work with and play on :)

Always enjoying your mod videos but i prefere the MiSTer and pocket for my gba needs. I really like it that this project is recycling gbas. ☮️

Nice video, but sooo much flux, do you use flux-core solder also? Just curious, in the class 3 / aerospace field we know the damage flux can do especially on ICs. Drag soldering is so much fun :)

Might be a dumb question but would any of these consolizers be usable with a capture device to stream/record?

I love the end result but there’s too much tiny fiddle soldering for a neophyte like me.

Being that it has internet connectivity, it must have some kind of system clock. Will it bypass the game clock on cartridges with depleted batteries?
