Many European countries- such as Germany- have 14 as the age of consent- while in Pakistan it is 16 for girls and 18 for boys, it’s 13 in Japan and a gobsmacking 20 in South Korea. There was a very definite “don’t create racial tension” element in ignoring this abuse in the UK, but there was also a massive degree of misogyny. These very vulnerable girls from poor and troubled backgrounds were unwanted, and written off as “slags” who were willing participants in their own sexual degradation. They were not seen as worth protecting. Had these crimes been carried out by white perpetrators, I am not convinced the response would have been wholly different.
