The design of this loco makes it my favourite loco class in British Railway. The bogie-frame and the engine humming sound is similar to WDP4, WDG4 class Locomotive of Indian Railway.

The Class 66 is my favourite UK loco so it's good to see more of them coming in. However, as I live in NZ, I'd always assumed they were British built, but that doesn't change anything. The new locos here, for example, are made in China.

Cat shut down the plant in London Ont. in the beginning of 2010. These locomotives where built in Muncie Indiana. EMD doesn't build the locomotives Progress Rail does. EMD builds all the engines, electrical lockers, high voltage cabinets, and generators / alternators. If Cat has their way it'll all be built in Mexico. Cheap labor!

Sub 802, Enjoyed watching this and all your other Videos, it is also nice to read the intelligent remarks by the other Subs, it's a very great shame that we no longer have Industry that put the "Great" in Britain, at 56 I can remember as a small boy watching the transition from Coal to Diesel locomotion I remember my dear departed fathers words and he was right there is no future for this country it's all going abroad, so much for a trading nation, still lets not get to heavy! they all look the same thank goodness for the Class 68 even if they are made by our European Cousins

Whatever happened to British Engineering when we have to buy Locomotives from America,we lead the world in Loco manufacturing both steam and diesel,I am not saying these are not magnificent machines but it is a shame that we have to buy them from abroad when there are highly skilled engineers here who would be delighted to be given the chance to build them here in the UK,import the engines if we can't build better but make the rest here.

It may just be me but I find the cab forward design locomotives more visually appealing than the style we have her in the states. If these are really made by EMD why can't/haven't these been used here in the US? I understand the rail gauge is different on these in the video but surely that can be accounted for domestic use.
@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways7 жыл бұрын
The track gauge is still 4'8" both in the UK and US but these are only 2400 hp and much smaller than your locos as UK trains are much shorter too. We have imported over 400 though!.....best wishes, Mike in Wales

So the UK and US share the same gauge tracks? Because i remember a video a couple of years ago showing 66's being tested in the States and 66's are beautiful machines up close
@ricardovelasco39765 жыл бұрын
The rail gauge (width of track) is the same, but the loading gauge is not (height and width of rolling stock - much bigger in North America) and the axle load is different as well (much heavier in North America).

Those locomotives were built in America. I will re-phrase that, a lot of Class 66's were built at the GM Diesel plant in London Ontario Canada. That title should read, the start of the last Class 66's from Canada. Progressive Rail of America would buy the plant and after a labour dispute shut the plant down I believe in 2012 with any new orders, the rest like those you have in this video came from Muncie Indian,, in America... but for the most part, a lot of them were built in the London plant. And because Progressive probably wanted London shut down anyway, was looking for any excuse to shut the plant down. So for me, off the backs of hard-working Canadians, who brought you one of the most reliable locomotives to date. I have hated progressive rail ever since. Petewt-Ting in the spit bowl..

As a retired USA engineer, I don't agree with that statement. Any EMD lasts one day short of forever, and much more reliable. I've read that your British locomotives have a very high failure rate, is this true? Nothing beats the sound of an EMD, idle or run 8.
