I Turned The WATER OFF For An ENTIRE WEEK On My Kentucky Bluegrass
I wanted to do a little test while I went to the beach on vacation. I turned the water off on my bluegrass to see how it would fair. I can say the week was hot and dry and the KBG took a beating. I immediately started watering the day I returned and it has bounced back pretty well.

Not gonna lie, that cut from before and after shocked me. I'm glad you did it too! It could be a rude awakening to someone in your area or further south wanting to do a full reno just to find out the next summer the harsh reality of KBG out of it's comfort zone.

And this video shows why I converted my lawn to TTTF from KBG in Massachusetts USA (north zone). With the water restrictions in my municipality, I could not keep KBG lawn green or even alive some years. Since converting to TTTF, lawn stays green through most summers with just natural rainfall and never dies completely.

We had brutal days a couple of weeks ago in Texas. 108, 106, etc., for over a week. Thank God I was home. I always water until my feet squish and never mow until the temp drops some. My fescue lived. 👏👏 We got to 99 today, but are heading downward in temps. I have ZERO doubt you will get the green perfect again. I think shutting the water off is the smartest thing to do. It reminded me how my dad (now passed) welded an awesome long tool to easily turn the water off when I went out of town. The city has since changed the meter and it won’t fit any longer, but I still have it and will never get rid of it. It reminds me of my dad every time I see it. Thanks for making me think of that.

I live in Chesapeake, Va (Greenbrier area) and I, too have 100% KBG in the front yard (with a TTTF/KBG mix in the backyard), going 3 years now (with Bermuda trying to infest). In the spring, I have changed my watering from every two days (the past 3 years) to every three days (45 mins a zone). It’s holding up very well. Also trying the water less this year, to see if I get less Nutsedge…which I’m getting good results with having less nutsedge. So I’m probably gonna stick to this watering schedule from now on.

Pete could you do a video on how high soil levels should be in comparison to hard scapes? For low cut turf the soil should most definitely be level, but for taller grasses there has to be some combination of soil height from the hard scape to the height the grass grows up to or past the hard scape which results in a preferred aesthetic.

Theory of mine is this.... heavily watered grass has shallow roots, cant handle long periods of heat and no water. Where as rarely human watered grass has deep roots that can handle longer periods of no water. So if this is the case, water if you water! Or if you don't, don't unless its less than 1 inch per week! 1 or the other.

Just a thought, works great for hot water heaters, irrigation, behind washing machine etc. flood damage is no joke as you have already experienced. Anyways take care!

@@GCITurf Pete I have KBG and I've always wondered if the actual blades of grass that go dormant will re-green when they receive moisture or are they now dead and the crown will need to generate new blades? Always thought they were dead and gone, but your answer here implies they will "come back to life". Maybe your answer is because the grass blades are only in the process of going dormant and are able to re-green as the ground level view looks like the grass hasn't fully entered dormancy but is overly dry. Any thoughts on this here or in future videos would be interesting. Also why do you think the areas where you dug your sprinkler trenches look more drought tolerant?

@@GCITurf well the grass I bought from your store seems to be doing just fine in the heat. However my water bill has more than tripled since winter. I bet you have already done a watering video, but about how much water you need to maintain grass. Like inches, etc etc.

Gone for a week? Simple, 0.75” irrigation two days before leaving followed up with another 0.75” the next day. PGR’s would have helped
