Congratulations. Could you please make a video series where Ollie builds a budget TT bike? I think it's fair to say that most people can buy at least the helmet and skinsuit or get something tailored; however, that bike is financially unrealistic, honestly. If you get the position the same, then you could do a video to your time and see how much the technology can help. This video could then offer a list of upgrades in order in terms of cost performance.

Minor semantic correction, power above threshold up to VO2max is not anaerobic (according to San Millan), it is a historic misnomer, there is plenty of oxygen, its just fast twitch muscles producing lactate due to poor aerobic efficiency. I sort of can confirm that (N=1), my O2 uptake goes up perfectly linear with power up to MAP (maximum aerobic power). BTW, Coggan got this one right calling Z5 VO2max zone and Z6 aneaerobic zone. It's really amazing how historic errors persist in all areas of life. The fact that you have to go harder on slow sections and easier on fast ones is not really news either. Minimize the time you are below average is key.

Idea for a future GCN challenge video (would involve GCN worldwide - not just UK). So the idea is to take an iconic ride from Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia, North America & South America (so 6 rides) This would be split as 4 hill/mountain climbs and 2 flats. There would be teams of 4 riders - so there would be two riders from each team doing a double ride Flat route is a minimum 40k Winning team completes all 6 routes first. rules. the same person from each team cannot ride both flat routes The routes can be ridden in any sequence, eg hil, hil flat, hill, flat hill however the next ride can only be started after the previous rider completed their turn would have to be done on an indoor platform such as rouvy and the starting time could be chosen randomly so that there is no bias towards UK or European operatives

I think bike handling/cornering is massively underrated. I’d consider myself a pretty poor bike handler to be honest, can’t MTB for toffee, slow descender etc etc but I recently did an Ironman and found myself was catching lots of people on turns who were then blitzing me on the straights between them. I was even having to push before braking zones to pass people who were particularly bad bike handlers and then opening a gap through the turns that they’d inevitably close on the straight and so on.

Great achievement Ollie, I love how you do the hard training work but mix it with the pure bike geekery. Do you think if you threw the rule book out the window and used something like a cadex for example how much difference that would make, or a recumbent, not a faired one. I always thought that a flat power for the course would be the fastest, so that’s interesting to learn it is actually faster to push harder into the wind and on climbs. Presumably on a longer ride a consistent power is better from the point of view of not “blowing up” with too much high power riding.

Hey Ollie, very impressed with the 18 minute ride. i just want to make a point on safety, i think you should have used LED lights on your TT bike, you're all in black low profile and going fast, you've very vunerable on the roads, especially the dark Wye road, i'm an older guy and just see the danger more now. I was in Denia, Spain recently and all the pros have backlights on, even in full sun. just have a think.
@joelecho8 ай бұрын
Ollie, does this tool discussed at @10:00 mathematically derive that pushing hard into wind is better than with tailwind, in addition to going hard uphill? I know that you know this, but the reason that it's faster on a climb, for example, to push harder when it's steeper (therefore slower) is that aero drag increases exponentially with velocity, whereas the extra drag of rolling resistance increases pretty linearly with velocity, and the amount of energy that it takes to overcome gravity on a climb is fixed based on your total system mass, so the rate of that energy output is directly proportional to your rate of ascent. So essentially in that case, it's more about working hard when you're moving through the air more slowly, rather than when you're moving slowly relative to the ground. Usually those would be the same, (and it's possible it still is and you just made a verbal typo) but it also stands to reason that the lower the CdA of the bike and rider, the faster you would have to be going before the intersection of rolling resistance and aero drag occurs, and with a smaller drag coefficient, aero drag would increase at a slower rate per unit of velocity, so is it the case here that you're so aero on the time trial bike that the extra rolling resistance is the driver of that? Does the lower CDA number make such a difference that the lines intersect at that much higher of a speed? Because if you have say, a 10km/h wind, and you're biking at 50km/h (round number for easy maths) at constant velocity, your WIND speed into the headwind is 60km/h, and it's 40km/h with the tailwind. Wouldn't you be better off riding a couple km/h slower into the headwind, so you'd be going say 48 with a wind speed of 58, and then going 52 with a wind speed of 42 when you have a tailwind? This would also be more even pacing from a wattage perspective, which is also likely more physiologically efficient (as blood lactate, too, is exponential). My hunch based on my understanding of the physics is that you'd be better off pacing such that you're going a little harder with a tailwind (or at the least, pushing the same watts) as it's really going to be air speed that matters, however I'm open to the idea that at certain speeds, CdAs, Yaw angles, etc, it could work differently. Curious to know your thoughts. :)
