30 years ago I painted two frames. Can of Ale crit bike, and a Truk mtn bike (lugged and bonded). The Trek currently lives with my daughter at Ohio State University. It was raced and has been beat to hell. There is no original component on it, but those lugs are just as tight as a Brit in a vinegar bath. For this next part think old style quill stem. I made 2 so that I could hang 1 frame whilst painting the next. To hold the frame in the stand, and hit every spot, cut a length of pipe, slightly less than the I.D. of the seat post, about 10 inch/25.4 cm length. Then cut each pipe 2 inch from one end. I cut at the same bias as a quill stem. Now you will have 2 nuts that fit inside the pipes, threaded onto a steel rod, which has been fired, bent 90 degree to form a handle, fired again, toss in cold water to re-temper. The nuts are epoxied, or welded, at either end of the pipe. Violin! 😂(merican humour), you have an interior seat post clamp, clamped onto your bike stand. Quite maneuverable. I still have mine. You can use an old seat post, but you still have to cut it and all. With this method you can cover the entire frame with the paint. Hey Park, (love you folks, and the repair vids) I have no patent, but sure would love a new CF, CX bike. I'm 62 and my aluminium Fuji is beating the hell out of me. Ha, aluminium gets the final laugh! Oval tube? Get creative. Just remember for the best job you have to go inside...like, well umm, Brits are polite and all so I will leave it there. Peace!

Nice job Ollie! Can you now put your chemistry degree to further use by anodising a titanium frame different colours? I believe you can do so by using different voltages. I am sure Moots will have a spare frame lying about. If it turns out crap, you can always paint it for the third one in the series.

DIY spray booth outside? What about a frame tent with the front ommitted. Open face down wind of course. That would shelter the job, would it be ventilated enough? Or a garage near an open door? Obviously Feb in the UK is not ideal for temperature, so be patient and pick your time, warm enough without being wet.

I've seen other DIYs on KZbin as I plan to do the same. I've noticed 3 key differences which may have made their's turn out better (other than experience): - I haven't seen any apply a laquer between the base coat and the crystals and they don't roughen up before applying the crystals. I don't think the roughening is necessary if the crystal liquid is mixed right as it already has the surface tension remover within. In fact, the rough surface seems to me like it impedes the propagation of the crystals. - Many thinned their top coats so that it contours the crystals better; - I feel the application of crystal liquid was insufficient from what we could see, probably aggravated by the roughened surface; - Probably better controlled environments in their cases. What would you do differently if trying again? Thanks

Just curious, you guys are a professional media production group, why not just table this project/video shoot until it's warmer? Why fight the conditions and risk messing it up? Not because of the fact that you mess it up, but why struggle? Wind/cold, not good for spray paint. Make life easier! Turned out decent though, impressive.

It's not quite the same effect, the crackles are smaller and more even rather than looking like ice crystals. Its just a paint you shoot on and it shrinks and cracks as it dries so there isn't the intermediate matting/chemical crystal mask or the polishing with scotchbrite stages. The only real trick with crackle is putting the paint down wet enough to get the effect to happen without getting runs. Definitely easier and can look great if you pick good colours.

Ollie, pls don't take it too personal but there was so much crap going on in those two videos. A bit of research would have been good. This comes from no pro but from somebody who tried, errored and succeeded in painting a couple of frames with spraycans. So this is my set-up 1) you never ever tuch the frame after prepping it with bare hands. alwways use gloves so you don't get grease (the one your skin produces) on the frame 2) putting up a proper paint booth is no rocket science. take plastik sheeting, the one painters use and cover a proper space e.g. in your garage, carport, garden shed, nothing fancy needed besides light. you have to keep your area dust -free 3) wear a proper mask, one the covers nose and mouth and filters any solvent vapors and also dust. the one your wearing is as good as nothing. Those masks don't cost a fortunde (see 3M or similar). also lint free garments or complete cover up with Onsie as used by painters 4) paint in the cans and on the bike need a temperature around 20C to cure, might not spray in autumn or winter in that case unless you can heat your shed 5) take an old bikestand and a broom handle. Clamp broom in stand, slide steerer tube of bike over broom. turn around by holding the bottom bracket left an right (do not touch any other part of the frame) turn bike around and slide it over agian. you can see and reach all sides of the frame properly
@bunnybike3606
@bunnybike3606 Жыл бұрын
6) Spray in long, swishimg motion. From one tube end to the other. Same pressure, same distance to the tube: pffffffffffft. It's not a mural where you can go pftpftpft. You want an even surface ;-) I love repainting my bikes, better than NBD. So far I tried out montana gold, specialistpaint (the brand Ollie uses) and duplicolor. Montana is cheaper and available in almost every paint store. Good for practicing. The best colorcoverage so gar are specialistpaints. Amazing colors, great coverage bit difficult to decide which one to choose. Better have more bike to paint in that case. The best clearcoat product so far is from colormatik 2K.

I'm all about diy, but there's a few things done wrong here that should be avoided. - Spraying outside in the open is a big no, not just because of the wind as mentioned, but also any particles or dust floating around will stick to the new paint and ruin your finish, you don't need a fancy spray booth, a few cardboard boxes can make a good solution. - Surgical masks are NOT good for spray paint, you need a mask with proper filters not what Ollie is wearing in the video, that's just dangerous for your lungs - Do not sand the frame inside your house without a filter or vacuum to catch the particles, the little particles will float everywhere in your house including your lungs
