In this video, we continue looking at the idea of moles. We learn how to use the relative formula mass to calculate the number of moles of a compound. You'll need this later, so it's really important material.
This video is based on the AQA spec. If you are following a different exam board then you should check your specification. The Amazon link above is an affiliate link. This provides a small commission which helps to support freesciencelessons. The cost remains the same to you. If you prefer not to use this, you can search Amazon for the Freesciencelessons workbooks.

For the love of all that is holy, THANK YOU. My chemistry teacher explained that formula mass is the same number as molar mass, but didn't explain that it has no unit, nor did he explain the way he got his math. He used a paragraph to explain the "formula" (which he muddied with confusing placeholders), and that was about it.

Hi Sir, I think you've made a mistake with the Relative Formula Mass (Mr) at 3:19 , I think it is supposed to be 94 not 95. Please do correct me if I'm wrong though. Thank you for all the great videos :D
@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons 5 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the comment. The Mr of MgCl2 is 95. You need to remember that the Ar of chlorine is 35.5 not 35. So 24 + (35.5 x 2) = 95. Hope that helps.

Sir, the last question about beryllium hydroxide is wrong. 9 + 1 =10 + 32 = 42, not 43. Therefore, the relative formula mass (Mr) is 42 not 43. So, the number of moles would be 64.5g / 42 which is 1.5357 rounded to 2dp is 1.54.
