After being issued one during my time as a conscript in Norwegian Army I was utterly sold on it. So much so that I spent some of my discharge money on one. I hardly go on hikes or into nature in general without it. Hundreds of uses.

@@EnduranceRoom I can remember being on a two week exercise during winter. The whole unit set up to guard a location as an opposing force for a royal marine assault. To break up the monotony, we were bused out to a home guard camp situated in a valley. Now this is well above the artic circle and I can remember noticing on the bus that every single tree in that valley leaned noticeably to the side. If not all of them, then most, in the same direction. Stepping out of the bus we soon found out why. The wind was funneled through the valley, from the sea. Being amplified and directed through. Everything was frozen and you slid around like on an ice rink. We were there to use the range for MG practice, with only some shipping containers used for target storage as intermittent shelter. The only way to not instantly freeze digits off, was to dress in the jerven like a wind bag. I almost froze my thumbs, saving them by pulling my hands inside, removing my mittens and pressing them into a warm spot in the middle of my torso. Great day in the army for sure 😄 Btw the Norwegian Army has changed supplier for the fjellduk. But jerven is the original.

I've had the Jerven Hunter for a few years now, it's never been left out of my gear no matter the season (also use it during exercises in the norwegian home guard). A fair warning though when using it a poncho when hunting (or in an exercise) is that it can be a bit too comfy, to the point of falling asleep.

Just got one of these and it ticks so many boxes at once. No need to get a tarp anymore, no need to buy a rain poncho or a bivy. For what it costs in its price tag it ultimately saves you from seperate purchases and carrying around extra gear. This one thing does it all and does it well.

Nice video Remember guys that this item was mainly used as an emergency 🚨 piece of equipment. The Ideal is to have a poncho, tarp or sleep system that can deal with the environment you’re in. It is not breathable so if you wrap up in it you will survive but you may be wet when you crawl out! So like every thing, use wisely and do your research. 👍🏴

As stated in the video, this is a multi use item designed for hunters to let them sit outside in the cold, not an emergency blanket.
@katherinegallagher96912 жыл бұрын
It’s not just an emergency blanket. It’s an extremely versatile and well designed piece of gear for serious outdoors people and also well worth the money. Obviously if it’s cold or raining, you need to layer and pack the proper stuff needed. It comes in hot orange for emergency *rescue* situations in extreme conditions for people who weren’t carrying their Jerven Hunter on their trip in the first place. Cheers 🇳🇴

I've slept many nights in one and the lining deals nicely with any condensation. It's not a mylar emergency blanket.
@garenkarapetian7097 ай бұрын
Hi. Interesting product. From your description of Jerven Fjelduken layers it seems very similar to Snugpack Arctic Mat, although the latter falls under the "sleep on" category. I've been thinking of DIY-ing something similar: Gortex+insulation+breathable_reflectics to serve as a multipurpose warm poncho, as well as bivvy-top or a field blanket.
@EnduranceRoom7 ай бұрын
That would be an excellent project. This jerven or the särmä thermal cloak are usually in rotation in my kit. Can be used with a hammock to make a more or less waterproof pod, serving as both top and bottom quilt. Wilderness Innovation has some interesting poncho related products along these lines worth taking a look at.
@garenkarapetian7097 ай бұрын
@@EnduranceRoom Thanks for the pointer. I discovered your channel only recently - I like the way you think on things (the belt-kit, Smersh buttpack, the plasch-palatka, etc). Sometimes it’s better to have one multifunctional item (even slightly heavier, than have 4 lightweight items). The thing is I’m a side-sleeper and quite broad shouldered. So after trying few off-the-shelf solutions, set out to build my own sleep system consisting of 3 modular parts: it’s like luxury self-inflating version of Savotta pad (80cm wide but much more compactable and with chambers of mylard reflectix) meets/zips with Fjelduken like warm poncho (my next DIY project described above) to make something akin to Dutch Army hooped bivvy, combined with British Army sleeping bag (Buffalo) dissected and turned into a 140cm quilt (or I might build a much lighter down quilt to save on weight and volume cause my carry system itself is not very voluminous). So far the whole kit is fitting neatly into my 40L Virtus Commander daysack (with food & clothing) added side pouches add more sustenance and modified British belt kit provides Level 2 admin & sustenance. And it is essentially a 4-season sleep system. Bring "craft" back into "bushcraft", you know. That is why I was intrigued by your video on Fielduken - that there is actually a similar product on the market - it’s one thing to design it in theory in one's head, but you never know if it will work until you’ve built it, but it’s great to know that it actually works and is widely used. By the way, do you know which insulation material is Fielduken using? I'm guessing it's plastic-based so that it still works in sub-zero temperatures.
@EnduranceRoom7 ай бұрын
@@garenkarapetian709 Absolutely bring the craft. Jerven bags use Primaloft. Outer shell is nylon with aluminum underside, primaloft insulation, with a more lightweight breathable layer on inside. Glad to connect. You have some solid ideas on your kit. 👍👍

Id really like to purchase one, but could never justify the price. Thanks for the cool vids and be safe out there-
@EnduranceRoom2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There really isn’t a preferred tarp size, but 10x10 or 8x10 would be great. The most economic solution is to use a hardware store poly tarp. You can reinforce the edges with gorilla tape, add loops, etc. I showed this a bit in the vintage military kit video from 2 months ago. Cheers

EG. a ball is beeing throwen at you , so you bend down and the Ball does not hit you. So a sneaky move to avoid been hit. German language does not prevere that kind of behavior. The Name "fjelduken" would translate in German in: bending down in the feeld". No German would say that you know. Like tacking down your pants to akseped what is comming.
