From '94-'98, I swear, Fishman was some kind of monster on those drums. He's been a phenomenal drummer for every year, but those years he just seemed extra buff and in shape and just built like a compact, hyper-speed drumming machine.

So I was front row between Page & Trey at this show. This 20 minutes of Phish was / is the single best moment of the over 100 shows I saw. Trey was enjoying this experience so much and really lost himself, to the point that I could literally see his eyes rolling back into his head, I am not joking when I say spittle was flying around as he was just so consumed with intense intention at this moment. You can tell at around 14:40 he runs out of steam and it coasts into a lull that then segues well into the mellow Makisupa. Certainly my most favorite show of all time. Thank you to the taper who captured this and whoever posted it.

My favorite part about Phish is the near endless discovery of killer jams like this. I've been going to shows since 1997 and have heard hundreds of hours of their music, but never this version of Piper until now. The build at 13:10 and subsequent machine gun Trey are some of the more badass notes I've ever heard them play. WOW!

I honestly think if I could choose to be at one single show in Phish history, it would be this one. There’s just such an intense energy that is so unique. Whether it was the tiny club, or the Bittersweet Motel cameras on stage, or the supposed weed brownies the band consumed before the show (I think that was this show anyway?). Whatever the reasons, I just can’t fathom being in that little club on that night.
@illuminotmereloaded68962 жыл бұрын
Dude. Whoever recorded this...You did a remarkable job. Thank you for taking the time to document this. A lot of people would say it's the Ghost from this night, but to me this Piper is the perfect encapsulation of that Europe Tour. Thanks as well to the uploader. Peace

+Geoff Grant I've been to plenty of shows in all the eras, but there is a distinct 'Trey' here that only surfaces occasionally in 3.0. That's just a part of maturing and growing older I think more then anything else. I'm not knocking the current Mr. Anastasio. :D

+JonG ahhhhh. Ok, I get it now. I've been going off and on since '95. The Gorge shows this year felt like a time machine. Great guitar playing...boring jam. Come on guys. Trey always says they play the best when they are listening to each other. You think Trey is using his ears in this jam? Ha. His fingers and his ego maybe. Sorry for hating, but more like Trey band. Can't even hear what anyone else is playing. Oh wait....at 14:51 it gets musical!!!!
@sideshowbob2 жыл бұрын
I thought the early parts of the jam (say 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 min's into the vid) were a little too over the top / aggro. Sounded too Eddie Van Halen-esque, like a 1985 Bud Lite commercial, trying too hard. Then by like 13 - 14 -15 min's & onward, they settled down, Trey got into some innovative leads, they looked & listened to each other a lot more. But jamband music is like that. I mean, the Grateful Dead sounded pretty Amateurish at times (in between some utterly Wizardly stuff) in late 60's/early 70's, chalk it up to youth, same here (altho then the GD were still late 20's, here Phish is mid 30's), & lots & lots of Rugs lol. I gotta go back thru the archives & see if I ever saw Piper in those days - must have somewhere along the line - used to see a dozen or so shows a year. I was born 1960, saw the GD in mid 70's in high school, hooked ever since, got into the early jamband scene hanging around tapers / Wetlands / Cap Th late 80's, saw all the early jambands all the time back then, been on & off with all of them since then - Mule, Panic, Phish, Bisco, Umphrey's, etc. Still hate SCI & Flaming Lips. Also - Goose SUCKS! Lamest band ever!!!!
