Gdynia from a drone | Gdynia from the bird's eye view | Cinematic | Poland
▸Gdynia is located on the coast of Gdańsk Bay and is part of the Tri-City, together with Gdańsk and Sopot. It is a young city that was established together with the port, basically in the middle of nowhere, in the interwar period, and opened access to the sea for Poland. Gdynia can boast of many interesting buildings from that period, mainly in the style of modernism and modern urban solutions. But there is also a very worn church of Saint Michael the Archangel, dating from the 12th century. One of Gdynia's flagship buildings is the Marine Station from 1933, from where the famous ship Batory departed to America. The most representative place in the city is Kościuszko Square. The historic ship Błyskawica and the sailing ship Dar Pomorza are available to tourists at its quay.

In the Middle Ages, there was a fishing village in the place where Gdynia was built. In 1926 it got city rights and turned into a big construction work. Independent Poland needed free access to the sea and a large port was built together with the city, including a military port. Gdynia was created thanks to the visionaries and hard work of many Poles who wanted to fulfill the dream of a free Poland from the beginning of the 20th century.
Once the port was ready, Gdynia developed rapidly for 15 years, until the outbreak of World War II. The city itself did not suffer much from the bombing, but the port and shipyard were completely destroyed.
After the liberation of the city in 1945, the former inhabitants of Gdynia began to return there, and Poles from Vilnius, Lviv and ruined Warsaw came. It was they who restored life in the city and the port, to which in September 1945 Polish merchant ships and warships as well as German, English and American ships received by Poland as part of war reparations began to return. The shipyard started to work at full speed on the renovation of vessels.
Gdynia buildings are an example of modernism, the dominant style in the architecture of the interwar period.
The oldest monument in Gdynia is the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, founded in 1124 by Prince Świętopełk II. There is a several hundred years old cemetery next to the church. They are located in Oksywie Górny.
Gdynia's symbolic building is the Sea Station from 1933. At that time, it was a modern building where sea travelers were checked and received. From there, they sailed to America, also to emigration, on board the famous ship Batory, and later Stefan Batory. Since 2012, the Emigration Museum has been located in the Marine Station.
The most famous and representative place in Gdynia is Kościuszko Square. The historic sailing ship Dar Pomorza - a former training ship - and the warship Blyskawica - a destroyer, which was a flagship of the Navy, are moored there. Both units are now a museum and tourists are eager to board them.
An interesting fact is the House of the Polish Sailor, built in 1937, whose shape resembles the ship's style. The house was to be the center of Polish sailing, but the outbreak of the war prevented it. Now it houses the Navigation Department of the Maritime University.
