I found the best solution to gear acquisition syndrome was to come down with gear modification syndrome- now my acoustic guitar has a speaker built into it and every one of my toys has self-installed piezoelectric pickups, even my tambourine

That’s actually a fantastic compromise- plus I’m sure the learning curve of modding is just as satisfying as making music. Good on ya!

Ohh yes, and if you have synths and a mixer, gear routing syndrome! Pushing your entire mix through a fuzz pedal and the synth filter? Why not!

As a photographer and filmmaker I found myself doing this a TON when I first got a job. Always spent my money on new stuff and a lot of crap that frankly sits around unused these days. But I've just learned to focus on what I need and budget around what's actually possible for me and not some pipe dream. I mean a RED Monstro would be fucking awesome but the body is 30 grand and everything that goes with it is another 10 grand. Therefore I'm looking at a Sony FX30 that shoots to inexpensive SD cards and has a wide range of budget lenses. The sensor isn't as big, it "only" shoots 4K video and some professional features are missing, but in reality it shoots video good enough for me to use on professional client work for years to come. And $2000 for a setup that might rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars over time is fantastic.

Dude, camera GAS is soooo much worse! I feel like most music gear is in the 3-4 figure range, and video tends to run closer to 4-5 figs. My trick when building my kit was to only buy new camera gear with money I'd made from shooting gigs. Also, I hear excellent things about the FX30- that's the camera I've been recommending to friends on a $2k budget. I shot this vid on an FX3 and guarantee most people wouldn't notice any difference between the two.

I made a complete recovery from GAS. To everyone who struggles with this disorder, I want to say that healing is possible. It only requires changing the way you think about yourself, your art, and the universe in general. Easy-peasy! KZbin was actually very helpful in getting me over thinking I always wanted more gear. All I had to do was watch a few videos about synthesizers, and KZbin's advertising algorithm made sure I was bombarded with ads for synths. There are so many! So many different kinds, and at every possible price-point! There are even free online synths, but ads don't tell you about those. As I was fully immersed in all this synthomania, my brain had a thought (NOTE: Thoughts are strongly discouraged by all algorithms. Thinking is considered bad for business.) and the thought was "I don't really like the sound of synthesizers." I had exposed myself to enough synth sound to remember that I only love human music. Now I spend a little time of each of my KZbin visits clicking "don't recommend this" and "not interested" on every recommended video about synth and AI music. Healed! I am healed!

I have asimple rule: If I need something to solve a problem, I will buy it. If I want something, becuase it is cool or interesting but don't need it, I sell other unused geart until I can buy the new fancy thing I want. And by the way, wher I live I cant't even buy a decent sized flat for 800.000 bucks.

I spend my $ on a better computer, moved my entire recording in the box and it's really revolutionized my process and assuaged my GAS. There are soo many free vsts and amp sims have gotten insanely good. I'm a bit nervous about relying on a PC for live performance though, so we'll see if getting in stage brings back the GAS

My best solution is making music with other people- when you have more than one brain tossing ideas around, the synergies can get really interesting really fast. The obvious problem here is that other people can be tough to coordinate with. Sometimes I have people over for jam sessions and just record as many loops as possible. That way I have something to use as a starting point even if we never get back together to record anything properly.

I thought that you were going to post some kind of solution to "Gear Acquisition Syndrome". I may have missed it but I don't think you did. But now coming back and reading the description it seems like you are encouraging it by saying "it could be worse".
@ghostpeppersounds
@ghostpeppersounds Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it could be worse… most of the time. Obviously shopping addiction is a very real thing and if you’re bankrupting yourself to buy instruments, there’s an issue to be addressed there. When I was growing up, I had a habit of telling my parents “this is the last ____ I’ll ever need!” , naively assuming that I wouldn’t immediately finding a new pedal or guitar or piece of equipment to lust after. So really, this video is about making fun of my dumb 10 year old self. Otherwise I find high-ticket items like that cello, and WHY they cost what they cost, really fascinating. There’s usually a great story behind the price.

@@ghostpeppersounds Yeah it's really amazing what you can do with very little. Like Brush One String - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2mrXmltfrGUp8U I was doing an experiment lately of just not buying things. It's really difficult. We live in a culture where people can't stop spending all their money as soon as they get it and it causes a lot of problems. And most of the stuff people buy is not really n necessary and doesn't really improve their quality of life. That said I am looking at an EQ pedal and another guitar haha.

I’ve tried so much digital stuff and always am disappointed. I’ve never purchased any of the modern expensive stuff though Lately I’ve found my cure for GAS is a really good amp. I have 25 pedals and only use 3 or 4 of them now. 50s tech is my cure for obsession with modern gear. I’m not into metal so sorry if my advice doesn’t apply to that genre
