Gear Acquisition Syndrome - or simply GAS - is a serious threat to your creativity! A gear obsession or even gear addiction like G.A.S. keeps you from making music!
In this video, I show you 5 ways to overcome GAS and how to stay creative by using the gear you already have.
Gear acquisition syndrome is not only limited to music equipment.
Photographers are also influenced by it and might benefit from my tips as well.

Great video! It breaks my heart when people don't believe they can make great music UNTIL they have the highest end gear

I hope this channel gets bigger man. Quality content and amazing communication skills I need to ask you about those dt990. Don’t you find any problems when mixing with them? I tried them for a couple of months and it was a total nightmare... the freq response is soooooo V shaped, no mids at all (and they are sold/advertised as a ‘’’’flat response’’’’ tool).

Hey Mariano, thanks for your support! 🙏 Well yes they are a little bit special, I have to admit that. Personally I would say I am already used to it. Sometimes I take out some lows to get a flatter response. I always wanted to try out Sonarworks Reference 4. I already downloaded the demo but had no time to test it out. I also always check with the Avantone fake. If something sounds great on this crappy speaker, it will also sound good on better speakers. My room is not acoustically treated and really reverberant so using my HS-7 for mixing is not the best choice. Have you checked out Reference 4 already? Cheers, Phil

@@AnotherProducer not really. I ended up selling those dt990 and getting a pair of sennheiser h600. The difference is huge. But yeah... I definitely have to check Sonarworks at some time. Thank hoy for your response, I thought i was the only one noticing that from the dt990's

To be fair on the advertisers, many really do think that their product is the holy grail; they want you to belong to their web community, share patches, buy ptch banks; follow upgrade paths; they want customer loyalty and returning customers because that is where revenue income is generated. Propellerheads have this philosophy; I mean Reason's Thor multi synth engine semi modular - you should not need anything but Thor and Reason's effects devices from Reason 7 upwards. Omnisphere 2 and serum - but I have spent a lot more money on other bits and pieces; I would have been better off to focus on two super systems like serum.Other than that, you enter into replication and false economy. And as for free VSTs, i literally download those as 'comfort blankets. When i become depressed about my lack of creativity, I want to buy or download something! The amount of composing i do at the piano only, i should have purchased a decent sampled piano instead of wasting my time with other software gear. For every new piece of gear, you have learning curve which takes time away from creativity. For Professionals, every piece of kit has to earn it way in the studio; tools are merely an investment, and you demand a return on your investment. It is difficult to sell software, you have to transfer the license from your iLok to the buyer's iLok account; most software, you are not allowed to sell it, e.g. Reason Refills.

Hey dom233, I think you wrapped it up quite nicely. A tool needs to be worth it. I mean its obvious that the advertisers think their product is that good. At least they want to sell it because it is their business. Therefore one should definitely check out demo versions if they are available. As you pointed out it also depends on how you produce and what you really need. In the past I also got fooled by advertisers into thinking that I really need their product. I bought Komplete 9 Ultimate. Turns out to effect my developement as a producer in a negative way. Because I did not lack instruments, but practice. In fact it was some kind of disappointing to realize that although I bought something that expensive I could not use it properly. I just increased the amount of things I had to learn while I should have practiced the basics like an instrument (piano/guitar/drums) or mixing and keep on going. As a professional you probably did practice the art of how to use basic tools first and afterwards you can deside if something new is really necessary or not. Quite often I see that real pros can get a nice result with only basic tools because most of the time it is not what you have but how you use it. I enjoyed reading your comment. Thanks for taking the time! Cheers, Phil

@@AnotherProducer Your video was great; some products like Serum have a cult following' Reason has a fanatical customer base. One point though; people change; 10 years in electronic music, then you may want to get into orchestral scoring; so, right there, you gonna be in the market for new software.

@@bdking2999 Ouuuh that's not much... I would probably go with a Focusrite Scarlett Solo which can handle 24bit/196kHz and comes with Ableton Live Lite and some other software. If this bundle with a mic stand and a pop filter is legit, it is a fair deal (amzn.to/2MOp26i). As a microphone, I would consider the Marantz MPM-1000 (amzn.to/2ZEha97). The only thing left would be a pair of headphones unless you already have one. This is really low budget and if you can afford it I would probably spend a little bit more because some of the items in those bundles look really cheap on the images already :D Nevertheless you would be able to make some decent recordings with this setup. I hope this helps you! Cheers, Phil
