My Mora knife and coffee mug come along every time. Thanks for being transparent about your weight loss. Doing anything when I’m heavy is no fun, but it never stopped me from getting out there. I always take dehydrated veggies, garlic, and herbs too. They move everything to the next level- even ramen. They are Uber light and healthy too

It has been awesome watching you slim down over the last several months. I decided to slim down myself when I realized decreasing my everyday “base weight” was the best thing I could do for my hiking and my overall health and it didn’t cost me anything like the hundreds of dollars I’ve spent trying to cut pack weight. I made my goal and have no doubt you’ll make yours.

I always have a Swiss Army Knife ( S.A.K.) with me during the trips. Now mine has a fire starter incorporated into the knife thanks to Tortoisegear. The catch is that only S.A.K pocket knives which have the Toothpick and Tweezers in the handle can be switched over to an fire starter. The Firefly is a Ferro rod that will fits where the toothpick or the tweezers go. The Helix Tinder fits in the corkscrew porting of the knife. The Firefly is designed for the wire stripper portion of the bottle opener to be used as a striker. On losing weight , I lost some weight and replaced it with my packs weight.

Just found your channel - good stuff!!! Super cool about the weight loss!!! I know it's not easy. Keep it up!!! Just spent two weeks on the AT in Georgia and NC. I "lugged around" a whole one pound of "dumb weight"... a Helinox Zero! The guy who called it dumb weight was actually quite envious when he saw me just chillin', having coffee, and watching the sunrise (I'm right there with you on that!). He said he's been debating it forever, and I sold him on it. Great call on the mug!!!

Congrats on your goal! I did the same some 20 years ago and only gained back 15 pounds. Only advice is make the loss of weight gradual over a long period of time, it will make the work of endurance come from your body itself instead of coming from your brain. Remember that this is a lifelong endeavour so if you adapt your brain to that the job gets easier.

Dude Wipes for sure, I try to always have a fixed blade knife on me in the woods, Single serve powdered creamer & sugar packets, and my wooden Kuksa mug for hot drinks. It's a little awkward in my pack because of it's odd shape, but it's lightweight, and IDK coffee and tea taste better to me out of it. IDK if it's just the wood absorbing and seasoning the cup, but yeah, it just feels right.

Great job on your health goals, John! You and I chatted briefly when you first had the come-to-Jesus self assessment. I also packed the weight on post-covid. I hit 300 as a 5'7" level 8 Dwarf Fighter and that was BAD. I started studying my lack of nutrition, unhealthy gi tract and possible insulin resistance. Then I detoxed off of white flour & sugar and went low carb, THEN I started intermittent fasting. I'm down 25 pounds so far, but already feel 10 years younger. I'm super impressed with your numbers, though. Stay healthy and positive, good sir and I wish you happy trails!

The knife is a life-saving emergency tool as well, but unfortunately one of the most underrated pieces of backcountry gear out there. It's pretty common to hear "what am I going to do with a knife in an emergency?" from seasoned and novice trekkers alike. Coming from a bushcraft/wilderness survival background, this question is nearly blasphemous but I get that the capabilities of a knife are not common sense, even though it should be for anybody venturing outdoors. Good video btw! A lot of people talk about just cutting things out but sometimes it's useful to discuss what things we should be keeping in.

Ziplock snack bag of condiments....A must. Salt & Pepper, dehydrated lemon and electrolyte packs are standard and will supplement depending on the food I bring. A coffee mug is nice. For nostalgia reasons, I bring an enamel coated metal mug. It's also my vessel for the evening beverages. I love the Nite Ize Moonlit Micro Lantern. I hang it from my hammock ridgeline and it's small enough to pack with the hammock into the stuffsack. It gives off a flood of light (but not overly bright) to do things in the hammock and it's bright enough to read a book. I like it better than using my headlamp as the light from the headlamp is more directional. (There's a newer version that is rechargeable and the same size called Radiant Micro Lantern.) A chair and spike table goes with me on almost every trip. That and the coffee cup makes hanging around the campfire with friends exceptional.

The MoonLit Micro Lantern was under $10 at a local sports store and it uses 2x 2032 coin battery. I think they say 60hrs for runtime, I keep an extraset of batteries in the med kit but I haven't used it yet.

Hey, congrats on your weight loss! My fight, too. If I lose 20 lbs, it makes carrying a 20-lb pack break even. Dang Covid-19-lbs! Everyone should have a Morakniv knife. Good quality, unbeatable price. I'm getting a Forester - from NC Custom Knives out of St. Petersburg, Russia. Gorgeous and I can't wait - a full tang beautiful knife for $110 plus shipping. Always carry a knife. Always carry a BIC lighter and a ferro rod. If you want comfy socks, try Darn Tough merino wool socks, they rock! I also carry a SOL bivvy bag just in case and a Coalcracker Bushcraft T95 tarp at only around 7 ounces of peace of mind shelter that sets up in less than one minute. Nice video. I agree with everything except the cotton socks. They suck.

On your knife. I'm sure you've heard this before. A full Tang knife is always best if your planning on batoning wood. Mora is an okay knife. But I carry a Top's Brakimo knife. This isn't a cheap knife folks. It is, a full Tang , bushcraft knife & a fighting knife. As far as a fire starter, I carry a piece of British flint and real steel with charcloth.

You're looking great John! I want to say something that you're probably hearing more these days..."ya gotta go shopping john, your clothes don't fit anymore" ....how awesome is that!? I'm also way down from my last hike. I can't wait to see what it feels like in the mountains. In your case it's important to look good....like Dan Becker...because if you can't be a good backpacker at least look good doing it. Chairs and condoms and big knives Oh My! Its hard to sell you on saving those lbs when you dumped a bucketload already. good on you John. Cheers

Hello John how's it going man. Wow man that is awesome news to hear about your weight loss. Going from 305 to 236 that is awesome man I'm happy for you. I know things are probably starting to feel better and easier for you trust me man I know I used to weigh 385 lb before I had my truck 🚛 accident and broke both of my feet. After I had my first foot surgery I lost a little over a hundred pounds & when I had my second foot surgery I went down to 257 now and the width of my foot has shrunken from 6 1/2 inches wide to 6 inches wide from the second foot surgery and weight loss. My doctor said if I keep lose more weight my foot would probably shrink even more. My goal is to get my foot under 5 inches wide so I can put on a pair of socks & shoes for the winter and not have to wear my flip flop for the winter time. It's been 35 years since the last time I had a shoe or sock on my foot. But I still have very fat wide toes that are straight across though. I just have to deal with that I guess. I would like to get under 200 lbs too. I am really happy for you John I'm really am man you inspired me to keep losing weight man. Thank you for your update man I was wondering about that. Thank you for sharing your weight loss and have a good weekend.

You're looking fantastic, well done. Also, I do love the "exception that proves the rule" situation of the cotton socks. John Kelley : NEVER bring cotton socks hiking! Also John Kelley : ...unless for sleeping, then they're comfy AF and i will always bring cotton socks.
